Wood Carving-Inspired Yoga Shala by Poonam Kharade

“Wood Carving-Inspired Yoga Shala” is a project by Poonam Kharade, Diploma in Interior Design 2025 at JD Institute, Goa. Inspired by the intricate craftsmanship and timeless beauty of traditional wood carving, the project explores the theme of wellness through cultural craftsmanship and mindful design. It aims to create a serene and harmonious environment that supports yoga, meditation, and holistic well-being while responding to the growing need for calming and restorative spaces.

Design Brief

The project is designed for yoga practitioners, wellness enthusiasts, and individuals seeking mindfulness and relaxation, keeping comfort, tranquillity, and user well-being at the core of the design process. The design approach focuses on functionality, spatial harmony, sensory comfort, and cultural integration, ensuring that the space remains both practical and meaningful. Through research into traditional wood carving and its ability to evoke warmth, craftsmanship, and connection to nature, the project identifies the importance of incorporating artisanal elements into contemporary wellness environments.

Materials such as solid wood, wood-finish panels with carved detailing, stone-inspired flooring, natural fabrics including cotton and linen, and energy-efficient lighting systems and techniques including wood carving integration, textured surface treatments, and natural material layering were chosen to achieve durability, comfort, and a calming atmosphere. Visually, the project is defined by warm wooden tones, natural textures, handcrafted details, soft lighting, and minimal yet elegant forms, reflecting mindfulness, balance, and a deep connection to nature. The final outcome, a Yoga Shala featuring spacious practice areas, meditation zones, storage spaces, and seamless circulation pathways, embodies serenity and cultural richness while fostering relaxation and inner well-being.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the enduring relevance of traditional craftsmanship within contemporary wellness spaces, positioning design as a tool for healing, cultural preservation, and human-centred experiences. Ultimately, “Wood Carving-Inspired Yoga Shala” stands as a reflection of harmony and mindfulness, where the timeless elegance of handcrafted woodwork enhances the practice of yoga and meditation.
