“Whispers of Cane” is a fashion collection by Lisa Isabel Cardoso, a designer of BSc Fashion and Apparel Design 2023 at JD School of Design, Goa. Inspired by the traditional Goan craft of cane weaving and its presence in local furniture and architecture, the collection explores the theme of cultural preservation through contemporary fashion. It aims to celebrate and reinterpret indigenous craftsmanship while responding to the growing need for sustainable, craft-driven design in modern fashion.
The collection is designed for modern individuals who value craftsmanship, cultural heritage, and innovative fashion, keeping their desire for meaningful and conscious design at the core of the creative process.The design approach focuses on innovation, functionality, comfort, and craftsmanship, ensuring that the collection remains wearable while honouring traditional techniques. Through research into Goan cane weaving, the collection identifies the opportunity to transform a traditionally rigid craft into contemporary resort wear that is both relevant and accessible.
Materials such as woven cane panels, lachka fabric, chiffon, and satin and techniques including cane craft weaving integration, layered construction, and sculptural detailing were chosen to achieve a balance between structure, movement, and elegance. Visually, the collection is defined by earthy browns, soft creams, fluid drapes, layered silhouettes, and geometric textures, reflecting the natural beauty of cane and the relaxed tropical essence of Goa. The final outcome, a contemporary resort wear collection for men and women, embodies the harmony between heritage and modernity and seeks to encourage appreciation for local crafts through fashion. Through this collection, the designer aims to highlight the relevance of traditional Goan craftsmanship in contemporary design, positioning fashion as a tool for cultural preservation, innovation, and sustainable thinking. Ultimately, “Whispers of Cane” stands as a reflection of heritage reimagined, with traditional weaving techniques transformed into elegant, wearable expressions of modern resort fashion.
