Whispers in Dots by Bhakti A Shah

“Whispers in Dots” is a project by Bhakti A Shah, B.Sc. Fashion & Apparel Design, at JD School of Design, Bengaluru. The collection reimagines the vibrant storytelling tradition of Bhil Art through contemporary kidswear, transforming its iconic dotted patterns, colourful motifs, and nature-inspired narratives into playful and wearable designs for children.

Design Brief

Inspired by one of India’s oldest tribal art forms, the collection celebrates the Bhil community’s deep connection with nature, wildlife, and everyday life. Traditional motifs featuring animals, trees, birds, and landscapes are thoughtfully simplified into child-friendly visual elements that spark curiosity and imagination while preserving the essence of the art form. Rather than replicating traditional paintings, the collection respectfully reinterprets their visual language for a younger audience. The garments feature handcrafted surface developments created through appliqué, French knots, blanket stitches, and layered fabric techniques. French knots recreate the signature dotted effect associated with Bhil paintings, while appliqué adds depth, texture, and a tactile quality to the garments. Together, these techniques create an engaging art-to-wear experience that introduces children to India’s rich cultural heritage.

A significant challenge during the design process was transitioning the concept from its initial inspiration and later adapting the collection from womenswear to kidswear. This required rethinking silhouettes, motif scales, colours, and functionality while ensuring the collection remained playful, comfortable, and culturally authentic. The collection uses a linen and cotton blend fabric, selected for its softness, breathability, and durability. A fresh palette of pastel green, pastel yellow, and soft blue forms the base, while brightly coloured appliqué motifs bring energy and vibrancy to each design.Through “Whispers in Dots,” the designer creates a meaningful connection between traditional tribal art and contemporary children’s fashion. The collection celebrates storytelling, craftsmanship, and cultural awareness while offering joyful garments that encourage young wearers to explore India’s artistic heritage in an engaging and imaginative way.
