The project is designed for children aged 2–6 years with locomotor disabilities, keeping their physical comfort, sensory engagement, and learning experiences at the core of the design process.The design approach focuses on accessibility, safety, interaction, and child-centric functionality, ensuring that the environment remains both nurturing and educational. Through research into inclusive learning environments and the sensory impact of play-based education, the project identifies the need for spaces that encourage movement, self-reliance, and tactile exploration. Materials such as locally sourced wood, non-toxic finishes, natural dyes, and tactile surfaces, along with techniques inspired by traditional Channapatna toy-making and modular spatial planning, were chosen to achieve safety, sustainability, and sensory stimulation.
Visually, the project is defined by curved forms, vibrant natural colours, soft edges, and interactive elements, reflecting playfulness, warmth, and inclusivity. The final outcome, an accessible preschool environment with sensory and therapy spaces, embodies creativity, independence, and joyful learning, seeking to positively impact the physical and emotional development of children.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the importance of integrating traditional craft with contemporary inclusive design, positioning interior design as a tool for empathy, accessibility, and meaningful childhood experiences. Ultimately, “Whirls of Wonder” stands as a reflection of how culture, play, and thoughtful design can come together to create empowering spaces for every child.
