Virasat Unmilanam by Rakshitha G

“Virasat Unmilanam” is a project by Rakshitha G, B.Sc. Fashion & Apparel Design, at JD School of Design, Bengaluru. Inspired by the timeless artistry of Chamba Rumal embroidery, the collection reimagines one of India’s most celebrated textile traditions through the lens of contemporary couture. Known for its intricate hand embroidery and narrative storytelling, the Chamba Rumal serves as the foundation for a collection that bridges heritage and innovation.

Design Brief

The collection draws inspiration from the embroidered folklore, layered compositions, and iconic square format of the traditional Rumal. Rather than preserving the craft as a flat textile, the designer transforms its visual and conceptual essence into sculptural, three-dimensional garments. Through experimental draping, structured forms, pleating, and layered silhouettes, the collection creates a dialogue between the two-dimensional storytelling canvas of the Rumal and the dynamic movement of couture fashion. Each garment functions as a living narrative, where folds, volumes, and construction details reflect the artistry and storytelling traditions associated with Chamba Rumal embroidery. Authentic motifs are thoughtfully preserved and reinterpreted within modern silhouettes, ensuring that the cultural identity of the craft remains central to the collection while embracing contemporary aesthetics.

A significant achievement of the project was the designer’s complete involvement in the creation process. From pattern development and garment construction to stitching, fitting, and finishing, all ten garments were independently executed by the designer. Managing complex couture techniques while maintaining consistency across the collection required exceptional technical skill, dedication, and problem-solving abilities. The collection uses cotton and cotton-linen fabrics, selected for their versatility, structure, and ability to support sculptural forms. A refined colour palette of ivory, burgundy, olive, and blue provides an elegant backdrop that allows the intricate storytelling elements and craftsmanship to remain the focal point.Through “Virasat Unmilanam,” the designer celebrates the enduring legacy of Chamba Rumal by transforming a traditional embroidered textile into contemporary couture. The collection honours India’s rich craft heritage while demonstrating how cultural traditions can evolve into innovative expressions of modern fashion.
