Veenai Vaasal by Sariga

“Veenai Vaasal” is a project by Sariga, a BSc Interior Design and Decoration 2023 batch student at JD School of Design, powered by JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bengaluru. Inspired by the traditional craftsmanship and musical essence of the Tanjore Veena, the project explores the theme of rhythm, harmony, and cultural expression through spatial design. It aims to create a music academy that blends musical learning with architectural identity, while responding to the need for acoustically balanced and creatively inspiring educational environments.

Design Brief

The project is designed for music students, teachers, performers, and cultural enthusiasts, keeping their learning experiences, comfort, and creative engagement at the centre of the design process. The design approach focuses on acoustic efficiency, functionality, cultural storytelling, and spatial harmony, ensuring that the environment supports both focused practice and collaborative musical experiences. Through research into musical learning spaces and acoustic planning, the project identifies the need for interiors that balance sound control with emotional and visual warmth. Materials such as natural wood panels, veneer finishes, acoustic wooden slats, and curved partitions, along with techniques including acoustic zoning, layered ceiling treatments, and fluid circulation planning, were chosen to achieve enhanced sound clarity and a calm, immersive ambience.

Visually, the project is defined by warm wooden textures, flowing curved forms, soft lighting, and string-inspired details that reflect the elegance and craftsmanship of the Veena. The final outcome, a culturally inspired music academy with performance spaces, embodies rhythm, creativity, and artistic connection while encouraging users to experience music through both sound and space.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the relationship between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary educational design, positioning architecture as a tool for cultural preservation, creativity, and emotional connection. Ultimately, “Veenai Vaasal” stands as a reflection of harmony and artistic expression, where the spirit of the Veena is transformed into an immersive and inspiring spatial experience.
