“Utkala Matsya” is a project by Mansha Dash, Diploma in Fine Jewellery Design 2025 batch at JD Institute. Inspired by the Matsya Avatar of Lord Vishnu and the intricate storytelling tradition of Odisha’s Pattachitra art, the project explores the theme of transformation, mythology, and evolving identity through wearable art. It aims to reinterpret traditional narratives and folk craftsmanship into contemporary jewellery while responding to the growing appreciation for culturally rooted and expressive design.
The project is designed for individuals who value artistic jewellery with cultural significance, handcrafted detailing, and narrative-driven aesthetics, keeping emotional connection, individuality, and heritage appreciation at the core of the design process.The design approach focuses on storytelling, craftsmanship, material contrast, and visual depth, ensuring that the outcome is both expressive and meaningful. Through research into the Matsya Purana, Pattachitra art, and traditional Indian craftsmanship, the project identified the need for jewellery that bridges mythology with contemporary wearable design.
Materials such as silver and copper alloy metal with gold polish, tala patra, resin, Pattachitra fabric, colours, and adhesives, along with techniques including inlay work, handcrafted detailing, layered composition, and surface embellishment, were chosen to achieve durability, richness, and intricate visual storytelling. Visually, the project is defined by bold contrasts, blackened surfaces, ornate motifs, vibrant narrative imagery, and layered textures, reflecting the tension between permanence and transformation. The final outcome, a contemporary jewellery collection inspired by the Matsya Avatar narrative, embodies mythology, fluidity, and cultural continuity while transforming traditional art into dynamic wearable expression.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the relevance of Indian folk art and mythological storytelling within contemporary jewellery design, positioning design as a tool for cultural preservation, innovation, and artistic exploration. Ultimately, “Utkala Matsya” stands as a reflection of transformation and resilience, where ancient narratives and traditional craftsmanship evolve into expressive contemporary adornment.
