The “Trompe l’oil,” collection is designed by Shashank V & Bhoomika Patel, students of the Diploma in Fashion Design at JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bengaluru and winners of “Read-to-wear Innovative Collection” Award. This collection is inspired by the concept of “Maya”, in Hindu and Buddhist philosophy, which is, in fact, the great truth. This world that we see around us is all but an illusion or a veiling of ultimate reality.
A magician’s trick on Maya binds our senses with an illusion, creating a delusion that there is nothing but this physical world. But in reality, a further understanding exists behind this, towards moksha, the release from this wheel of births and deaths.
It is like looking into a mirror and wondering whether it’s you. That is Maya. It makes us see beyond looks and tells us what we understand for real might just be an illusion. We try to think more about what we prioritize by living online versus those precious moments we have with our loved ones. Is what we’re doing on the Internet bringing us closer to ourselves, or are we seeking the validation of society?
Maya invites us to be in the present moment—the eternal now. We free ourselves from the illusions of time when we let go of attachments to the past or worries about the future. Living mindfully, we begin to see clearly through the fog of Maya.
