“The Weight of Presence” is a fashion collection by Rishi Janardhan Naik, a designer of Diploma in Fashion Design, July 2025, at JD Institute, Goa. Inspired by the spiritual essence of Goddess Shantadurga, the disciplined movement language of Bharatanatyam, and the symbolic significance of Yoruba Ìlèkè beadwork, the collection explores the theme of quiet power, balance, and feminine authority. It aims to redefine contemporary power dressing by expressing strength as an unseen yet deeply felt presence while responding to the evolving understanding of feminine leadership and identity.
The collection is designed for modern women who value confidence, individuality, and purposeful design, keeping their need for garments that communicate authority and elegance at the core of the design process.The design approach focuses on structured tailoring, movement, symbolism, and contemporary craftsmanship, ensuring that the outcome is both impactful and sophisticated. Through research into Bharatanatyam’s grounded posture and controlled movement, alongside the cultural philosophy of Yoruba beadwork as a vessel of contained energy, the collection identifies the potential of translating invisible strength into wearable form.
Materials such as suiting fabric (40% viscose, 60% cotton), modal satin, glass beads, metal buckles, and rivets and techniques including Yoruba ileke-beaded embroidery, architectural pleating, structured construction, and tailored silhouette development were chosen to achieve authority, fluidity, and subtle depth. Visually, the collection is defined by architectural silhouettes, lowered visual centres of gravity, hidden embellishments, and a dark palette of charcoal, black, forest green, and deep red, reflecting restraint, spirituality, strength, and composure. The final outcome, a contemporary womenswear collection, embodies quiet dominance and inner resilience, seeking to empower wearers through presence rather than performance.Through this collection, the designer aims to highlight alternative expressions of power rooted in cultural memory, spirituality, and craftsmanship, positioning design as a tool for storytelling and identity. Ultimately, “The Weight of Presence” stands as a reflection of strength that does not seek attention, proving that true authority is often most powerful when it is quietly felt rather than loudly displayed.
