“The Sanctum Series” is a project by Sejal Khanted, BSc Jewellery Design 2023 at JD School of Design, powered by JD Institute of Fashion Technology. Inspired by the intricate marble carving traditions of Palitana temple architecture and the evolving philosophy of inclusive design, the project explores the theme of Functional Grandeur and Heritage Reimagined. It aims to transform sacred architectural craftsmanship into lightweight, modular jewellery while responding to contemporary needs for versatility, ergonomic comfort, and identity-driven adornment.
The project is designed for modern wearers who value cultural heritage, statement jewellery, and functional luxury, keeping comfort, inclusivity, and contemporary adaptability at the core of the design process.The design approach focuses on modular engineering, material experimentation, craftsmanship, and ergonomic functionality, ensuring that the collection remains visually grand yet wearable. Through research into traditional Palitana stone carving techniques and contemporary jewellery ergonomics, the project identifies the need for jewellery that balances sculptural impact with lightweight practicality.
Materials such as Plaster of Paris, MDF, polished brass, and malachite cabochons were used, while techniques including detailed surface carving, modular construction, and structural reinforcement were chosen to achieve refined texture, durability, and lightweight flexibility. Visually, the project is defined by geometric filigree patterns, architectural detailing, carved white surfaces, rich green malachite accents, and structured metallic frameworks, reflecting the spiritual elegance and rhythmic precision of temple architecture. The final outcome, a contemporary modular jewellery collection, embodies the coexistence of heritage craftsmanship and modern functionality and seeks to create a wearable experience rooted in both history and innovation.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight how traditional architectural crafts can evolve into contemporary luxury jewellery, positioning design as a tool for cultural preservation, inclusivity, and adaptive innovation. Ultimately, “The Sanctum Series” stands as a reflection of ancestral artistry transformed for modern living, where sacred craftsmanship is reimagined into functional, elegant, and meaningful adornment.
