“The Musubi Collection” is a project by Dikshit Kumar A, BSc Jewellery Design 2023 batch at JD School of Design, powered by JD Institute of Fashion Technology. Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of the “Red Thread of Fate” and the traditional craft of Kumihimo braiding, the project explores the theme of connection, adaptive luxury, and transformation. It aims to reinterpret traditional thread craftsmanship into a modular jewellery system that encourages personalization and emotional connection, while responding to the modern consumer’s desire for multifunctional, customizable, and meaningful luxury accessories.
The project is designed for contemporary users who value cultural storytelling, versatile jewellery, and experiential fashion, keeping individuality, adaptability, and emotional engagement at the core of the design process.The design approach focuses on modularity, innovation, craftsmanship, and transformability, ensuring that the collection remains both luxurious and functionally dynamic. Through research into traditional Japanese braiding techniques and evolving concepts of modular jewellery, the project identifies the need for accessories that can adapt to different occasions and personal styles while maintaining artisanal authenticity. Materials such as sterling silver,
hand-woven silk threads, nylon braids, diamonds, and rubies were used, while techniques including Kumihimo braiding, pavé stone setting, and precision-engineered hinged clasp systems were chosen to achieve flexibility, durability, and refined craftsmanship. Visually, the project is defined by intertwined braided textures, vivid crimson and blush tones, polished silver surfaces, and gemstone accents, reflecting the symbolic connection between tradition, destiny, and contemporary luxury. The final outcome, a modular jewellery collection featuring necklaces, brooches, and watch bracelets, embodies adaptability and emotional storytelling and seeks to create an interactive relationship between the wearer and the object.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight how heritage crafts can evolve into modern modular experiences, positioning jewellery design as a tool for personalization, cultural continuity, and sustainable luxury. Ultimately, “The Musubi Collection” stands as a reflection of timeless connection and evolving identity, where traditional craftsmanship and contemporary innovation are woven together into a transformative wearable experience.
