“The Lost Origin” is a fashion collection by Debra Glynis Gonsalves, a designer of BSc Fashion and Apparel Design 2023 at JD School of Design, Goa. Inspired by the growing impact of deforestation on the environment, the collection explores the theme of sustainability and environmental awareness. It aims to highlight the loss of natural ecosystems while responding to the urgent need for conversations around conservation and responsible living.
The collection is designed for environmentally conscious individuals and contemporary fashion consumers who value meaningful design and cultural craftsmanship, keeping their awareness, lifestyle, and values at the core of the design process.The design approach focuses on storytelling, sustainability, and innovation, ensuring that the outcome is both impactful and wearable. Through research into deforestation and its effects on ecosystems, the collection identifies the need to reconnect people with nature through design. Suiting fabric was chosen as the primary material, while Kantha embroidery was reinterpreted as a contemporary surface technique to symbolize repair, restoration, and resilience.
Visually, the collection is defined by earthy shades of brown, beige, and cream, alongside textured embroidery inspired by tree bark and the concentric rings of cut tree trunks. These elements reflect both the beauty of nature and the scars left behind by environmental destruction. The final outcome, a contemporary streetwear collection, embodies a message of healing and awareness and seeks to encourage a deeper appreciation for environmental preservation.Through this collection, the designer aims to highlight the importance of protecting natural resources while celebrating traditional artisan techniques, positioning fashion as a tool for awareness and positive change. Ultimately, “The Lost Origin” stands as a reflection of nature’s fragility and resilience, with every embroidered detail serving as a reminder that preserving our origins is essential for a sustainable future.
