Future → Built Creatively
“The Living River” is a fashion collection by Diya Damodar Bavachikar, a designer of BSc Fashion and Apparel Design 2023 at JD School of Design, Goa. Inspired by rivers as living ecosystems and their role in sustaining life, culture, and memory, the collection explores the theme of environmental resilience, transformation, and sustainability. It aims to raise awareness about water conservation while responding to the growing need for responsible coexistence with natural resources.
The collection is designed for environmentally conscious individuals who value sustainable fashion, craftsmanship, and purposeful design, keeping their values and lifestyle choices at the core of the design process. The design approach focuses on adaptability, sustainability, innovation, and storytelling, ensuring that the outcome is both functional and meaningful. Through research into river ecosystems, water conservation, and circular design systems, the collection identifies the need for fashion that reflects environmental responsibility. Materials such as suiting fabric, casement,
cotton blends, and chiffon were selected, while techniques involving nuno felting, fluid draping, layered construction, and texture development were used to capture the movement and evolving nature of water. Visually, the collection is defined by flowing silhouettes, layered forms, organic textures, and fluid movement, reflecting the journey of rivers from origin to renewal. The final outcome, a sustainable fashion collection, embodies the message of coexistence and seeks to inspire greater appreciation and care for natural water systems.Through this collection, the designer aims to highlight the importance of environmental stewardship, positioning fashion as a tool for awareness, reflection, and positive change. Ultimately, “The Living River” stands as a reflection of resilience and regeneration, demonstrating how nature’s cycles can inspire a more sustainable future.
