“The Interlace” is a project by Yukta Dave, Diploma in Interior Design May 2025 batch at JD Institute. Inspired by the traditional craft of basket weaving, the project explores the theme of interconnection, rhythm, and immersive spatial experience. It aims to transform weaving from a decorative craft into a spatial system that shapes movement, sound, light, and interaction, while responding to the need for dynamic and experiential hospitality environments.
The project is designed for contemporary social users and club audiences, keeping collective interaction, sensory engagement, and fluid movement at the core of the design process. The design approach focuses on continuity, spatial fluidity, acoustics, and experiential lighting, ensuring that the outcome is both functional and emotionally immersive.Through research into traditional basket weaving techniques and spatial systems, the project identifies the potential of interlacing structures to create porous boundaries, layered acoustics, and organic circulation. This understanding informed the development of the club environment, where woven structures define pathways, seating zones, and transitional spaces.
Materials such as wood, metal, fabric, and flexible woven elements, along with techniques including layered construction, perforation, modular weaving systems, and integrated responsive lighting, were chosen to achieve sensory depth, structural continuity, and dynamic interaction. Visually, the project is defined by interwoven forms, layered textures, rhythmic lighting, and fluid spatial transitions, reflecting movement, connection, and collective energy. The final outcome, an immersive club space, embodies the idea of architecture as a social fabric, where people, sound, and space become interconnected through the logic of weaving.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the evolving relevance of traditional crafts within contemporary experiential design, positioning design as a tool for interaction, innovation, and community building. Ultimately, “The Interlace” stands as a reflection of how weaving can move beyond craft to become a living spatial experience, where rhythm, light, and human connection are seamlessly woven together.
