“The Crafted Bowl” is a project by Rhea Elizebeth D Cruz, a BSc Interior Design and Decoration 2023 batch student at JD School of Design, powered by JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bengaluru. Inspired by the cultural richness of Kashmiri papier mâché craft and the evolving relationship between dining and experiential retail, the project explores the theme of immersive cultural storytelling through spatial design. It aims to create a hybrid environment that combines a noodle bar with an antique retail store, while responding to the growing demand for interactive, experience-driven hospitality spaces that connect users with craft and heritage.
The project is designed for urban diners, cultural enthusiasts, tourists, and contemporary consumers who seek meaningful and engaging experiences beyond conventional retail or restaurant settings. Their need for interaction, exploration, and sensory engagement forms the foundation of the design process. The design approach focuses on functionality, spatial clarity, cultural immersion, and experiential storytelling, ensuring that the outcome is both practical and memorable. Through research into Kashmiri papier-mâché craftsmanship, hybrid hospitality models, and user behaviour in experiential environments, the project identifies the need for spaces that seamlessly merge retail, dining, and cultural engagement. Textured finishes, wood, warm lighting elements, and handcrafted display systems were chosen to achieve tactile richness, acoustic comfort, sustainability, and visual cohesion. Techniques including layered material application, modular display systems, live cooking integration, and immersive digital interaction through virtual reality were used to create a multi-sensory user experience.Visually, the project is defined by warm earthy tones, handcrafted textures, minimal yet expressive forms, and curated spatial layering that reflect the authenticity and elegance of Kashmiri craft traditions. The final outcome, a hybrid noodle bar and antique retail experience, embodies cultural storytelling, interaction, and material innovation, seeking to create a stronger emotional connection between users, craft, and space.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the evolving role of traditional crafts within contemporary hospitality and retail environments, positioning design as a tool for sustainability, cultural preservation, and immersive user engagement. Ultimately, “The Crafted Bowl” stands as a reflection of how heritage crafts can be reinterpreted into modern experiential spaces, where dining, storytelling, and craftsmanship coexist within a cohesive and meaningful environment.
