The Concrete Walk by Sanjana R S

“The Concrete Walk” is a project by Sanjana R S, Diploma in Interior Design May 2025 batch at JD Institute. Inspired by the raw materiality of exposed concrete and the innovative possibilities of translucent concrete, the project explores the theme of material honesty, durability, and contemporary retail design. It aims to redefine the perception of concrete by transforming it from a basic construction material into an expressive and sensory architectural element, while responding to the need for immersive and brand-driven retail environments.

Design Brief

The project is designed for modern urban consumers and Birkenstock customers, keeping functionality, comfort, and experiential engagement at the core of the design process. The design approach focuses on minimalism, precision detailing, innovative material application, and spatial clarity, ensuring that the outcome is both practical and visually impactful.Through research into material-driven retail interiors and the evolving applications of translucent concrete, the project identifies the potential of concrete to create tactile, atmospheric, and emotionally engaging spaces.

This insight informed the development of the store’s spatial identity and lighting strategy. Materials such as exposed concrete, translucent concrete, metal, and neutral finishes, along with techniques including integrated lighting systems, custom concrete fabrication, and minimalist detailing, were chosen to achieve durability, visual depth, and sensory interaction. Visually, the project is defined by raw textures, muted tones, filtered lighting, and clean architectural forms, reflecting authenticity, strength, and timelessness. The final outcome, a contemporary retail store, embodies the balance between industrial character and refined spatial experience, while seeking to create a calm and memorable environment for users.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the versatility and evolving relevance of concrete in contemporary interiors, positioning design as a tool for innovation, material exploration, and experiential storytelling. Ultimately, “The Concrete Walk” stands as a reflection of how raw materials can be transformed into meaningful spatial experiences, where light, texture, and simplicity come together to redefine modern retail design.
