“Terracotta-Inspired Bistro” is a project by Mackloyd Gomes, Diploma in Interior Design 2025 at JD Institute, Goa. Inspired by the warmth, textures, and handcrafted beauty of terracotta craftsmanship, the project explores the theme of heritage-inspired hospitality design. It aims to create a contemporary bistro that celebrates traditional artistry while responding to the need for comfortable, functional, and memorable dining environments.
The project is designed for diners seeking welcoming and aesthetically engaging hospitality experiences, keeping comfort, visual appeal, and ease of movement at the core of the design process.The design approach focuses on functionality, ambience, material expression, and user experience, ensuring that the space supports efficient operations while creating a distinctive identity. Through research into terracotta craft and its characteristic textures, colours, and handmade qualities, the project identifies opportunities to reinterpret traditional craftsmanship within a contemporary dining setting.
Materials such as terracotta tiles, textured finishes, natural wood, metal, glass, and energy-efficient lighting systems and techniques including textural layering, feature wall treatments, and warm lighting integration were chosen to achieve durability, comfort, and visual richness. Visually, the project is defined by earthy tones, tactile surfaces, warm lighting, handcrafted textures, and natural material combinations, reflecting authenticity, warmth, and the timeless appeal of terracotta artistry. The final outcome, a contemporary bistro with comfortable seating areas, efficient service zones, kitchen facilities, and organized circulation, embodies the fusion of cultural heritage and modern hospitality while creating an inviting and memorable dining experience.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the enduring relevance of traditional craftsmanship within contemporary commercial interiors, positioning design as a tool for cultural storytelling, sustainability, and user-centred experiences.
