Tactile Cubism by Alcandra Annsha J

“Tactile Cubism” is a project by Alcandra Annsha J, M.Sc. Fashion Design & Management at JD School of Design, Bengaluru. Inspired by the revolutionary art movement of Cubism, the project explores the theme of artistic expression, craftsmanship, and contemporary surface design. It aims to translate the fragmented forms, geometric compositions, and multiple perspectives of Cubist art into wearable fashion while highlighting the value of handcrafted textile techniques.

Design Brief

The collection is designed for creative, fashion-conscious individuals who appreciate wearable art, innovative craftsmanship, and distinctive design. Keeping their desire for individuality and artistic expression at the core of the design process, the collection offers contemporary garments that merge visual impact with everyday wearability. The design approach focuses on transforming two-dimensional artistic concepts into tactile fashion experiences. Through research into Cubist principles and geometric abstraction, the project identified opportunities to reinterpret fine art through the traditional craft of rug hooking. Wool yarn is carefully hand-hooked onto denim fabric, creating raised geometric motifs and textured surfaces that reflect the depth and movement of Cubist compositions. Rather than overwhelming the garments, these handcrafted embellishments are strategically placed to enhance the silhouettes while maintaining balance and functionality.

Visually, the collection is defined by asymmetrical forms, geometric paneling, colour blocking, and bold textural contrasts. A contemporary palette featuring shades of indigo blue, black, white, and neutral tones complements the rugged denim base while allowing the rug-hooked artwork to become the focal point. The final outcome is a ready-to-wear collection that successfully bridges the worlds of art, craft, and fashion.Through this project, the designer highlights the potential of traditional textile techniques in modern fashion. Ultimately, “Tactile Cubism” reflects the fusion of artistic experimentation and craftsmanship, demonstrating how abstract art can be transformed into expressive, tactile, and visually engaging contemporary design.
