“Sutra Saaya” is a project by Animesha Jaiswal, MA Fashion Communication 2024 at JD Institute. Inspired by the delicate beauty of Bakhiya embroidery, a traditional shadow-work embroidery technique, the project explores the theme of subtle craftsmanship, contemporary elegance, and cultural reinterpretation. It aims to modernize heritage embroidery through refined silhouettes and minimal aesthetics while responding to the evolving preferences of urban consumers.
The project is designed for urban and semi-urban consumers who appreciate understated luxury, artisanal detailing, and timeless contemporary fashion. Their preference for refined simplicity and thoughtful craftsmanship remains central to the design process.The design approach focuses on minimalism, texture, and modern wearability, ensuring that traditional embroidery techniques remain relevant in contemporary fashion contexts. Through research into Bakhiya embroidery and modern consumer aesthetics, the project identifies the need for handcrafted fashion that balances cultural authenticity with subtle sophistication.
Materials such as cotton, linen, mulmul, cotton silk, and organza were selected for their softness, breathability, and ability to enhance delicate embroidery work. Techniques including tonal threadwork, handcrafted detailing, and shadow embroidery were carefully integrated to achieve softness, elegance, and refinement. Visually, the project is defined by warm neutral palettes, deep maroon accents, organic motifs, and fluid minimal compositions, reflecting grace, softness, and handcrafted authenticity. The final outcome, a contemporary fashion and lifestyle brand, embodies timeless elegance and seeks to preserve the emotional and artistic value of Bakhiya embroidery in a modern design language.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the importance of preserving traditional textile crafts through thoughtful reinterpretation, positioning design as a tool for cultural continuity, craftsmanship, and contemporary storytelling. Ultimately, “Sutra Saaya” stands as a reflection of quiet sophistication, where heritage embroidery evolves into refined modern expression.
