Sutara Ease by Harshitha R G

“Sutara Ease” is a project by Harshitha R G, B.Sc. Fashion & Apparel Design at JD School of Design, Bengaluru. Inspired by the traditional Godhadi quilt-making craft of Maharashtra, the collection combines heritage craftsmanship with inclusive design to create contemporary fashion specifically tailored for wheelchair users.

Design Brief

The inspiration stems from the philosophy behind Godhadi quilts, which are traditionally handcrafted from layers of recycled textiles stitched together using thousands of running stitches. Beyond their functional purpose, Godhadis embody sustainability, resilience, and the transformation of everyday materials into meaningful creations. The collection translates these values into adaptive fashion, where craftsmanship and functionality work together to enhance comfort, accessibility, and self-expression.Designed with the needs of wheelchair users in mind, the garments incorporate thoughtful features such as magnetic closures, side openings, adjustable silhouettes, seated-fit tailoring, soft seams, and breathable construction. These design solutions address common mobility challenges while promoting independence and ease of dressing. Patchwork-inspired panels, quilted textures, and handcrafted stitching draw directly from the visual language of Godhadi, preserving the spirit of the craft within a modern context.

A significant challenge during development was sourcing suitable materials that were lightweight enough for layering yet durable enough for everyday wear. Finding artisans willing to execute extensive hand-stitching also proved difficult, leading the designer to personally complete much of the hand and machine stitching throughout the collection. The collection is crafted using cambric fabric as the base material, combined with patchwork created from recycled textiles collected from boutiques, family, and friends. A translucent net layer adds depth and texture to the garments. The colour palette remains diverse and organic, reflecting the varied fabrics sourced through the upcycling process.Through “Sutara Ease", the designer demonstrates how traditional artisan practices can evolve to meet contemporary needs. By combining Godhadi craftsmanship with adaptive design and sustainable principles, the collection presents an inclusive fashion narrative that celebrates heritage, functionality, and innovation while empowering wheelchair users through thoughtfully designed clothing.
