Future → Built Creatively
“Studio Terra” is a project by Sobhana Kar Mohapatra, a BSc Interior Design and Decoration 2023 batch student at JD School of Design, powered by JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bengaluru. Inspired by the geometric patterns, texture, and climatic responsiveness of perforated bricks, the project explores the theme of experiential and sustainable spatial design. It aims to create a boutique integrated with a cafeteria and interactive workshop space, while responding to the need for breathable, engaging, and multifunctional interiors in contemporary commercial environments.
The project is designed for shoppers, creatives, workshop participants, and social visitors, keeping user comfort, interaction, and experiential engagement at the core of the design process.The design approach focuses on functionality, openness, sustainability, and visual connectivity, ensuring that the environment remains both practical and immersive. Through research into traditional masonry techniques and passive environmental strategies, the project identifies the need for spatial solutions that enhance ventilation, natural lighting, and user interaction without compromising aesthetics. Materials such as locally sourced perforated bricks, natural finishes, and earthy textures, along with modular planning techniques and layered spatial compositions, were chosen to achieve climatic comfort, visual rhythm, and a strong material identity.
Visually, the project is defined by warm earthy tones, textured surfaces, geometric patterns, and dynamic light and shadow effects, reflecting the balance between solidity and openness. The final outcome, a boutique and workshop space integrated with a cafeteria, embodies interaction, creativity, and sensory richness, seeking to create a welcoming and memorable user experience.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the evolving role of traditional materials in contemporary interiors, positioning design as a tool for sustainability, innovation, and community engagement. Ultimately, “Studio Terra” stands as a reflection of how vernacular craftsmanship can be reimagined into modern experiential spaces, where materiality itself becomes a medium of connection and interaction.
