“Stitching Memories” is a project by Badole Rashmi Binduraj, Diploma in Interior Design May 2025 batch at JD Institute. Inspired by the traditional Maharashtrian textile craft of Godhadi, the project explores the theme of sustainability, storytelling, and cultural continuity through hospitality design. It aims to reinterpret discarded textiles and handcrafted quilting techniques into a contemporary boutique homestay experience while responding to the growing need for conscious, emotionally engaging, and experience-driven hospitality spaces.
The project is designed for travelers and guests seeking immersive and culturally rooted stays, keeping comfort, warmth, and sensory connection at the core of the design process. The design approach focuses on material reuse, handcrafted detailing, and experiential storytelling, ensuring that the outcome is both functional and emotionally meaningful.Through research into Godhadi quilting traditions and sustainable craft practices, the project identifies the potential of textile waste as a valuable design resource, which informed the overall development of the space. Materials such as discarded fabrics, natural wood, stone, and earthy finishes, along with techniques including layering, patchwork, visible hand-stitching, and textile upcycling, were chosen to achieve tactile richness, sustainability, and visual authenticity.
Visually, the project is defined by layered textures, patchwork compositions, handcrafted surfaces, and warm earthy tones, reflecting nostalgia, resilience, and the beauty of imperfection. The final outcome, a boutique homestay, embodies cultural intimacy and conscious living, while seeking to create an immersive hospitality experience rooted in craft and memory.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the evolving relevance of indigenous textile crafts, positioning design as a tool for sustainability, storytelling, and emotional connection. Ultimately, “Stitching Memories” stands as a reflection of heritage evolving through contemporary design, where every stitch, layer, and textile fragment contributes to a meaningful spatial narrative.
