Spiral by Kriya Jain

“Spiral” is a project by Kriya Jain, BVA Graphic Design 2022 batch at JD School of Design, Bengaluru. Inspired by the storytelling essence of Kalamkari art and the emotional disconnect created by digital memory culture, the project explores the theme of memory, cultural storytelling, and immersive interaction design. It aims to transform personal memories into interactive visual narratives while responding to the growing distance between younger audiences and traditional art forms in today’s fast-moving digital environment.

Design Brief

The project is designed for contemporary users, creative audiences, culturally curious individuals, and digitally engaged communities seeking meaningful and personalized experiences, keeping emotional connection, interaction, and storytelling at the core of the design process. The design approach focuses on combining handcrafted aesthetics with immersive digital technology, ensuring that traditional artistic values are reinterpreted in a contemporary and emotionally engaging manner. Through research into Kalamkari visual language, storytelling systems, augmented reality experiences, and modern digital behavior,

the project identifies the need for more meaningful ways of preserving memories and engaging with cultural heritage. Materials and elements such as flowing linework, handcrafted textures, organic compositions, layered forms, abstract visual motifs, augmented reality interfaces, and motion-based storytelling are combined with techniques including visual abstraction, interactive design, digital animation, augmented reality integration through Artivive, and personalized storytelling systems to achieve immersive and emotionally resonant experiences. Visually, the project is defined by earthy tones, rhythmic compositions, fluid forms, handcrafted textures, layered storytelling elements, and abstract Kalamkari-inspired aesthetics, reflecting the emotional depth of memory and the timeless quality of traditional artistic expression. The final outcome, an interactive experiential platform featuring augmented reality artworks across prints, garments, frames, phone cases, and digital applications, embodies the idea of transforming memories into living narratives while seeking to reconnect audiences with emotion, craft, and cultural storytelling.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the potential of combining heritage-inspired aesthetics with contemporary technology, positioning design as a tool for emotional connection, cultural continuity, and immersive interaction. Ultimately, “Spiral” stands as a reflection of how traditional artistic values can evolve within modern digital culture, with memories becoming more than static images through experiences that are personal, interactive, and emotionally alive.
