“Shilpakosha” is a project by Daivik S Bellawara, BVA Graphic Design 2022 batch at JD School of Design, Bengaluru. Inspired by the rich heritage of Mysore rosewood inlay art and the gradual decline of traditional craft practices, the project explores the theme of cultural preservation, artisan empowerment, and heritage-driven contemporary living. It aims to transform traditional rosewood inlay craftsmanship into a premium lifestyle experience while responding to the need for sustainable market opportunities and renewed relevance for artisans in modern contexts.
The project is designed for design-conscious consumers, premium lifestyle audiences, culturally aware homeowners, collectors, and individuals seeking meaningful handcrafted products that combine heritage with functionality, keeping usability, authenticity, and emotional value at the core of the design process.The design approach focuses on balancing traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics, functionality, and storytelling, ensuring that the products remain both culturally rooted and relevant for modern lifestyles. Through research into Mysore rosewood inlay traditions, artisan practices,
heritage motifs, luxury branding, and contemporary lifestyle trends, the project identifies the need for functional and emotionally engaging craft products that move beyond decorative souvenirs. Materials such as rosewood, sustainable inlay materials, handcrafted finishes, premium packaging components, and artisan-made decorative surfaces are combined with techniques including intricate inlay craftsmanship, customisation systems, branding, storytelling integration, and digital touchpoints to achieve a refined and premium lifestyle experience. Visually, the project is defined by dark wood tones, pale inlay detailing, floral vines, paisleys, peacock and elephant motifs, geometric borders, and minimal luxury aesthetics, reflecting the richness of Mysore heritage while maintaining a sophisticated contemporary identity. The final outcome, a premium heritage lifestyle collection featuring trays, coasters, mirrors, wall panels, jewellery boxes, organisers, and gifting objects, embodies the idea of “Heritage Made Livable” while seeking to create deeper appreciation for traditional craftsmanship in everyday living spaces.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the importance of preserving artisan traditions through thoughtful design systems, contemporary applications, and meaningful storytelling, positioning design as a tool for cultural continuity, sustainability, and artisan dignity. Ultimately, “Shilpakosha” stands as a reflection of how traditional craftsmanship can evolve into modern lifestyle experiences, with heritage becoming not only preserved but actively lived and valued within contemporary spaces.
