“Roots & Reflection” is a project by Nayana S, a Diploma in Fashion Design student at JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bengaluru. Inspired by the traditional crafts of Kashmiri Namda felt work and Kamdani embroidery, the collection presents a contemporary womenswear narrative that celebrates India’s textile heritage through a modern lens.
The collection explores the relationship between cultural roots and personal reflection, creating garments that blend heritage craftsmanship with contemporary design. Drawing inspiration from the handcrafted beauty of Namda and the delicate metallic detailing of Kamdani embroidery, the designs reinterpret these traditional techniques through clean silhouettes, refined tailoring, and thoughtfully placed embellishments.Rather than replicating historical motifs, the collection simplifies and modernises floral and geometric elements, transforming them into elegant surface details that complement contemporary fashion. Texture plays a significant role throughout the collection, with layered embroidery, subtle metallic accents, and handcrafted detailing creating depth while maintaining a sophisticated aesthetic.
Designed for confident women who appreciate authenticity, craftsmanship, and timeless style, the collection reflects the values of slow fashion and cultural preservation. It demonstrates how traditional Indian crafts can evolve into versatile garments suited for festive occasions, formal events, and modern evening wear.One of the major challenges was successfully combining two distinct craft traditions into a cohesive design language. Balancing the visual identity and techniques of Namda and Kamdani required extensive experimentation with fabrics, silhouettes, colour palettes, and embellishment placement.Crafted using modal silk and crepe, the collection features a refined palette of navy blue and cream. The contrast between the rich navy tones and soft cream shades enhances the handcrafted details while creating an elegant and timeless visual appeal.Through “Roots & Reflection", the designer successfully bridges heritage and contemporary fashion, transforming traditional craftsmanship into sophisticated womenswear for the modern era.
