“Rasa Varnika” is a project by Harshini N, MA Fashion Communication 2024 at JD Institute. Inspired by the rich history and craftsmanship of traditional lac work, the project explores the theme of cultural continuity, material innovation, and sustainable contemporary design. It aims to reinterpret lac, often associated with conventional craft forms, into modern lifestyle and décor products while responding to the growing need for meaningful, sustainable, and culturally rooted design solutions.
The project is designed for contemporary consumers who appreciate handcrafted products, artistic expression, and sustainable living. Their preference for unique, aesthetically refined, and culturally connected objects remains central to the design process.The design approach focuses on material exploration, modern aesthetics, and functional adaptability, ensuring that the products remain both expressive and practical. Through research into traditional lac craftsmanship and artisan processes, the project identifies the need for contemporary applications of lac beyond decorative crafts. Materials such as natural lac resin, lac dye, glass, wood, metal, fabric, and sustainable packaging elements were selected to highlight the translucency, texture, and organic qualities of the material.
Techniques including heating, filtering, hand-shaping, pigment experimentation, and surface applications were used to achieve refined finishes and modern product forms. Visually, the project is defined by rich organic pigments, glossy translucent textures, warm earthy tones, and minimal contemporary forms, reflecting emotion, craftsmanship, and material storytelling. The final outcome, a contemporary lifestyle and décor brand, embodies the balance between heritage and innovation while seeking to position lac as a versatile material for modern living spaces.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the evolving relevance of indigenous craft materials in contemporary design, positioning design as a tool for sustainability, cultural preservation, and social impact. Ultimately, “Rasa Varnika” stands as a reflection of how traditional craftsmanship can evolve into future-focused design, creating meaningful connections between material, community, and modern lifestyles.
