“Thekkan Azhagu (Southern Beauty)” is a fashion collection by Kannan Chandrasenan, a designer of BSc Fashion and Apparel Design 2023 at JD School of Design, Goa. Inspired by the rich heritage, traditions, and aesthetics of Dravidian culture, the collection explores the theme of cultural identity and timeless elegance. It aims to celebrate Southern Indian beauty through contemporary fashion while responding to the need for designs that honour tradition in a modern context.
The collection is designed for individuals who appreciate culturally rooted fashion with a contemporary appeal, keeping authenticity, elegance, and versatility at the core of the design process.The design approach focuses on heritage, craftsmanship, comfort, and modern sophistication, ensuring that the outcome is both meaningful and wearable. Through research into South Indian traditions, textiles, and cultural expressions, the collection identifies the importance of preserving regional identity through contemporary design.
Materials such as Kanjeevaram silk, cotton, and handwoven textiles sourced from Tamil Nadu, along with refined tailoring and subtle embellishment techniques like puff quilting, were chosen to achieve richness, comfort, and elegance. Visually, the collection is defined by warm earthy tones, fluid silhouettes, rich textures, and refined details, reflecting the grace, strength, and cultural richness of Southern India. The final outcome, a contemporary fashion collection, embodies the beauty of heritage while seeking to make traditional influences relevant for modern audiences.Through this collection, the designer aims to highlight the enduring value of regional craftsmanship and cultural traditions, positioning design as a tool for preservation, expression, and cultural storytelling.
