Princess Noir by Dhakshayani R

“Princess Noir” is a project by Dhakshayani R, B.Sc. Fashion & Apparel Design, at JD School of Design, Bengaluru. The collection reimagines royalty through a contemporary lens, portraying a modern princess whose strength is defined by confidence, resilience, and individuality rather than traditional symbols of power. Developed under the theme Artisan 2.0, the collection celebrates the evolution of handcrafted artistry into contemporary couture.

Design Brief

Inspired by the beauty and symbolism of nature, the collection features vines, leaves, and blooming flowers that represent growth, renewal, perseverance, and femininity. These organic forms are transformed into intricate three-dimensional embellishments using hand-moulded metallic wires wrapped with metallic threads. The handcrafted details appear to grow naturally across each garment, creating a sculptural and visually striking effect. The silhouettes combine structured tailoring, sculpted corsetry, and architectural forms with fluid couture elements. This balance between strength and softness reflects the collection’s central narrative of feminine power and grace. Rather than replicating traditional embroidery techniques, the collection reinterprets artisanal craftsmanship through contemporary construction and innovative surface development.

Crafted using premium blazer suiting fabric, the garments provide the structure required for couture silhouettes while supporting the elaborate handcrafted embellishments. A predominantly black colour palette symbolises elegance, mystery, confidence, and timeless sophistication. Champagne gold metallic embroidery adds understated luxury, while accents of green leaves and deep red flowers introduce symbolic references to growth, resilience, passion, and courage. The collection aligns strongly with the Artisan 2.0 theme by transforming traditional handcraft into a modern couture language. Every handcrafted vine, leaf, and flower showcases the patience and skill of artisanal techniques while demonstrating their relevance in contemporary fashion.Through “Princess Noir,” the designer creates a powerful dialogue between heritage and innovation, proving that craftsmanship can evolve beyond tradition to become bold, modern, and globally relevant. The collection stands as a tribute to artistry, femininity, and the enduring value of handmade couture.
