“Nocturnal Garden” is a fashion collection by Ria Paul Gonsalves, a designer of BSc Fashion and Apparel Design 2023 at JD School of Design, Goa. Inspired by the quiet transformation of nature after sunset, the collection explores the theme of mystery, abstraction, and the hidden beauty of the natural world. It aims to translate the atmosphere of a nocturnal landscape into contemporary evening wear while responding to the emotional connection people have with nature and the unseen elements that emerge in darkness.
The collection is designed for individuals who appreciate conceptual fashion, elegance, and refined craftsmanship, keeping their desire for expressive yet sophisticated garments at the core of the design process.The design approach focuses on fluidity, movement, texture, and visual depth, ensuring that the outcome is both artistic and wearable. Through research into the changing visual character of nature at night, the collection identifies the potential of abstraction in fashion to evoke emotion and curiosity, which informed the development process.
Materials such as lachka, tulle, and satin, along with techniques including Italian-cutwork embroidery, layering, and controlled transparency, were chosen to achieve a balance between structure, softness, and dynamic surface effects. Visually, the collection is defined by deep dark tones, sheer layers, organic cutwork forms, and elongated silhouettes, reflecting the interplay of shadow, moonlight, concealment, and revelation found within a nocturnal garden. The final outcome, an evening wear collection, embodies mystery, elegance, and subtle drama, seeking to immerse the wearer in an experience of discovery and quiet beauty.Through this collection, the designer aims to highlight the emotional and narrative potential of nature-inspired design, positioning fashion as a tool for storytelling and artistic expression. Ultimately, “Nocturnal Garden” stands as a reflection of transformation and hidden beauty, inviting viewers to look beyond the visible and appreciate the wonder that unfolds in the darkness.
