“Namda Art” is a project by Chanchal, Diploma in Graphic Design 2025 at JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bengaluru. Inspired by the rich cultural heritage of Kashmiri Namda Art and traditional embroidery practices, the project explores the theme of heritage preservation through contemporary design. It aims to revive and modernize traditional Namda craftsmanship while responding to the declining visibility of artisans, reduced interest among younger generations, and competition from machine-made products.
The project is designed for contemporary consumers, handicraft enthusiasts, home décor audiences, and culturally conscious buyers who value handmade artistry, sustainability, and authentic cultural products. Their preferences for modern aesthetics and meaningful storytelling were kept at the core of the design process.The design approach focuses on cultural storytelling, modern branding, minimal aesthetics, and visual refinement, ensuring that the outcome is both authentic and globally relevant. Through research into traditional Kashmiri embroidery, Namda felting techniques, artisan practices, and evolving lifestyle trends,
the project identifies the need for modern applications and stronger visual communication for traditional crafts. Materials such as wool textures, earthy colour palettes, and embroidery-inspired visual elements, along with techniques including branding, packaging design, typography exploration, and digital applications, were chosen to achieve a balance between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary appeal.
Visually, the project is defined by warm earthy tones such as walnut brown, ivory beige, olive green, and terracotta, combined with floral Kashmiri motifs, handcrafted textures, and elegant typography. These elements reflect warmth, handmade authenticity, and the cultural richness of Kashmir. The final outcome, a contemporary brand identity and lifestyle design system for Namda Art, embodies the idea of “stitching culture into modern design” and seeks to reconnect younger audiences with traditional craftsmanship.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the importance of artisan empowerment, cultural sustainability, and modern storytelling, positioning design as a tool for preservation, innovation, and emotional connection. Ultimately, “Namda Art” stands as a reflection of cultural continuity and transformation, proving that traditional crafts can evolve into contemporary experiences while preserving their handmade essence and artistic identity.
