Najwa: Whispers of the Desert by Minta Elma Mathew

“Najwa: Whispers of the Desert” is a project by Minta Elma Mathew, B.Sc. Fashion & Apparel Design, at JD School of Design, Bengaluru. Inspired by Al Sadu weaving, the UNESCO-recognised textile tradition of Bedouin women, the collection reimagines this heritage craft through contemporary textile innovation and luxury ready-to-wear womenswear.

Design Brief

The collection draws inspiration from the storytelling traditions embedded within Al Sadu textiles, where geometric motifs were used to communicate identity, memory, belonging, and everyday experiences. Rather than directly replicating traditional patterns, the designer translates the rhythm, repetition, and visual structure of Al Sadu into engineered pleating and permanent heat-set textile manipulation. This approach transforms woven geometric forms into sculptural, three-dimensional surfaces that preserve the spirit of the craft while presenting it in a contemporary context.

Developed using polyester crepe, selected for its excellent heat-setting properties, the garments feature permanently pleated textures that create depth, movement, and architectural interest. Relaxed and elongated silhouettes are balanced with areas of both pleated and smooth fabric, symbolising the contrast between nomadic movement and the stillness of the desert landscape. The collection is designed for culturally aware women who appreciate craftsmanship, innovation, and understated luxury. One of the major challenges was respectfully interpreting the cultural significance of Al Sadu without appropriating its traditional motifs. Extensive experimentation was required to convert woven geometric patterns into engineered pleats, while sourcing specialised heat-set pleating facilities added complexity to the production process. Constructing garments from permanently textured fabrics also demanded careful pattern development and precision tailoring. The collection’s palette consists of Lava Falls red, Angora sand beige, and Black Beauty black, colours inspired by traditional Al Sadu textiles and the desert environment. These shades create a sophisticated balance of warmth, contrast, and refinement.Through “Najwa,” the designer successfully bridges heritage and innovation, demonstrating how traditional craftsmanship can be translated into modern fashion through advanced textile techniques. The collection celebrates the voices and stories of Bedouin women, transforming cultural narratives into contemporary garments that are expressive, wearable, and timeless.
