Mithila Mosaic by Abhilasha Kumari

“Mithila Mosaic” is a project by Abhilasha Kumari, M.Sc. Fashion Design & Management, at JD School of Design, Bengaluru. Inspired by the traditional folk art of Madhubani painting from the Mithila region of Bihar, the project explores the theme of cultural preservation, artistic storytelling, and contemporary fashion. It aims to transform the intricate motifs, symbolism, and visual richness of Madhubani art into modern garments while responding to the growing appreciation for heritage-inspired fashion.

Design Brief

The collection is designed for contemporary women who value individuality, cultural expression, and artistic craftsmanship. Keeping their preference for distinctive yet versatile fashion at the centre of the design process, the collection offers garments suitable for festive occasions, cultural events, exhibitions, and premium casual wear. The design approach focuses on reinterpreting traditional art through innovative surface development and modern silhouettes.

Through extensive research into Madhubani’s symbolic motifs, narrative compositions, and vibrant colour language, the project identified opportunities to translate the art form into fashion using patchwork, hand embroidery, and hand painting. Intricate Madhubani-inspired panels are strategically placed on jackets, bodices, sleeves, and other garment sections, creating visual depth while preserving the essence of handcrafted storytelling. Materials such as cotton fabric for detailed hand-painted artwork and black net fabric for structure and contrast were selected to achieve both artistic expression and contemporary elegance. Visually, the collection is defined by tailored silhouettes, flowing sheer layers, and vibrant Madhubani-inspired artwork set against a sophisticated dark palette. Rich shades of red, yellow, blue, green, and earthy tones create striking contrasts while celebrating the vibrancy of Indian folk traditions. The final outcome is a collection that balances luxury, craftsmanship, and cultural heritage.Through this project, the designer highlights the relevance of indigenous art in contemporary fashion. Ultimately, “Mithila Mosaic” reflects the seamless fusion of heritage and modernity, demonstrating how traditional craftsmanship can evolve into wearable art while preserving its cultural significance.
