Legacy of Padmasambhava Cham by Dharani T

“Legacy of Padmasambhava Cham” is a project by Dharani T, Diploma in Fine Jewellery Design 2025 batch at JD Institute. Inspired by the sacred Cham dance traditions of Sikkim and the spiritual symbolism associated with Guru Padmasambhava, the project explores the theme of cultural preservation, spirituality, and multifunctional jewellery design. It aims to reinterpret the symbolic richness of Vajrayana Buddhist traditions into contemporary wearable art while responding to the need for meaningful jewellery that carries both heritage and functionality.

Design Brief

The project is designed for individuals who value culturally rooted jewellery, symbolic storytelling, and versatile contemporary adornments, keeping spiritual identity, craftsmanship, and wearability at the core of the design process. The design approach focuses on symbolism, multifunctionality, craftsmanship, and material experimentation, ensuring that the outcome is both meaningful and practical. Through research into Cham dance rituals, Buddhist iconography, and Himalayan cultural traditions, the project identified the importance of preserving sacred narratives through modern design expression.

Materials such as silver with antique gold polish, brass, wood, jute, lapis lazuli stone, and cufflink buttons, along with techniques including embossing, handcrafted detailing, multifunctional assembly, and layered composition, were chosen to achieve authenticity, durability, and cultural richness. Visually, the project is defined by lotus motifs, vajra symbolism, wavy mask-inspired patterns, organic textures, and antique metallic finishes, reflecting spirituality, transformation, and sacred energy. The final outcome, a multifunctional jewellery collection featuring transformable necklaces, cufflinks that convert into rings, and symbolic hair accessories, embodies heritage, adaptability, and devotional storytelling while creating a strong connection between traditional rituals and modern adornment.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the relevance of Himalayan Buddhist art and ritual symbolism within contemporary jewellery design, positioning design as a tool for cultural continuity, spiritual expression, and innovation. Ultimately, “Legacy of Padmasambhava Cham” stands as a reflection of sacred tradition and transformation, where ancient spiritual narratives are preserved and reimagined through meaningful contemporary jewellery.
