Kinnal Interplay by Prachi.P

“Kinnal Interplay” is a project by Prachi.P, Diploma in Interior Design July 2025 batch at JD Institute. Inspired by the traditional Kinnal toy craft, the project explores the theme of interactive craftsmanship and experiential retail design. It aims to create a modular and engaging pop-up store that transforms shopping into an immersive and playful experience, while responding to the growing need for flexible and experience-driven retail environments.

Design Brief

The project is designed for children, families, and urban shoppers, keeping interaction, curiosity, and user engagement at the core of the design process. The design approach focuses on modularity, flexibility, tactility, and sensory engagement, ensuring that the outcome is both functional and memorable. Through research into the making process of Kinnal toys and contemporary retail experiences, the project identifies the need for spaces that encourage participation and emotional connection rather than passive shopping.

Materials such as wood, MDF, and soft tactile surfaces, along with techniques including modular assembly systems, layered forms, and interactive installations, were chosen to achieve flexibility, adaptability, and a playful visual identity. Visually, the project is defined by vibrant colours, curved forms, layered structures, and tactile textures, reflecting the handcrafted essence and playful character of Kinnal toy craft. The final outcome, a modular pop-up retail store, embodies interaction, storytelling, and adaptability while seeking to create a joyful and immersive retail experience. Through this project, the designer aims to highlight how traditional craft practices can be reinterpreted into contemporary retail environments, positioning design as a tool for engagement, storytelling, and cultural revival. Ultimately, “Kinnal Interplay” stands as a reflection of how craftsmanship can evolve into interactive spatial experiences, where tradition and modern retail seamlessly come together.
