“KHATAMBAND CEILING ART” is a project by Ayushi Agrawal, Diploma in Interior Design May 2025 batch at JD Institute. Inspired by the traditional Kashmiri craft of Khatamband, the project explores the theme of cultural revival through contemporary wellness design. It aims to reinterpret the geometric precision and layered craftsmanship of Khatamband into a modern holistic wellness centre, while responding to the growing need for calming and emotionally restorative environments.
The project is designed for individuals seeking relaxation, mindfulness, and healing experiences, keeping sensory comfort, emotional well-being, and spatial harmony at the core of the design process. The design approach focuses on experiential zoning, spatial rhythm, material warmth, and cultural storytelling, ensuring that the outcome is both functional and immersive. Through research into Khatamband craftsmanship and wellness-oriented environments, the project identifies the importance of integrating heritage-inspired spatial experiences into contemporary lifestyles.Materials such as natural wood, stone, textured surfaces, and warm finishes,
along with techniques including geometric layering, interlocking patterns, and diffused lighting compositions, were chosen to achieve sensory richness and spatial continuity. Visually, the project is defined by rhythmic geometric patterns, warm earthy tones, tactile textures, and softly illuminated architectural details, reflecting harmony, balance, and mindfulness. The final outcome, a holistic wellness centre inspired by Khatamband art, embodies restoration, cultural identity, and emotional calm while seeking to create a meaningful and immersive healing environment. Through this project, the designer aims to highlight how traditional crafts can evolve into contemporary architectural experiences, positioning design as a tool for cultural preservation, emotional wellness, and experiential innovation. Ultimately, “KHATAMBAND CEILING ART” stands as a reflection of how heritage craftsmanship can be reimagined into modern spatial design, where tradition and well-being seamlessly coexist.
