Kavach by Keerti M Kohalli

“Kavach” is a project by Keerti M Kohalli, M.Sc. Fashion Design & Management, at JD School of Design, Bengaluru. The collection reimagines medical wear as a modern protective shield by combining the strength of handwoven Khadi, natural dyeing techniques, and functional textile innovation. Inspired by the dedication and resilience of healthcare professionals, the project explores how everyday medical uniforms can become sustainable, comfortable, and purpose-driven garments.

Design Brief

The collection draws inspiration from the concept of “Kavach,” meaning protection, symbolizing the role of doctors and medical students as modern-day guardians. Elements such as shields, medical safety equipment, and ECG rhythms influence the visual language of the collection, creating a balance between protection, care, and technology. The structured seam details reflect the strength of armour, while the clean silhouettes maintain the practicality required for medical environments.Developed using 100% Khadi cotton, the collection focuses on sustainability, breathability, and comfort for long hours of wear. The fabric is naturally dyed using tamarind seed husk, creating earthy shades of brown, beige, and white inspired by calmness, purity, and grounding. Herbal textile finishes enhance the functionality of the garments by providing antimicrobial and odor-resistant properties without compromising softness or comfort.

Designed with healthcare professionals in mind, the silhouettes incorporate practical features such as functional pockets, ease of movement, and breathable construction while maintaining a contemporary aesthetic. The development process involved challenges such as achieving consistency in natural dye shades, balancing protective design elements with medical functionality, and ensuring the herbal finish enhanced performance while preserving fabric quality.Through “Kavach,” the designer creates a meaningful connection between craft, science, and purpose. The collection highlights sustainable innovation in medical apparel while honouring healthcare professionals through garments designed to protect both the wearer and the environment.
