“Kala Griha” is a project by Rajeshwari C, MA Fashion Communication 2024 batch, at JD School of Design, Bangalore. Inspired by the rich heritage of Indian art forms such as Kasuti embroidery, Madhubani art, Mysore mural influences, folk ornamentation, temple-inspired geometry, and traditional visual storytelling, the project explores the theme of cultural preservation through contemporary design. It aims to transform traditional artistic expressions into modern collectable home décor while responding to the growing demand for meaningful, culturally rooted, and aesthetically distinctive lifestyle products.
The project is designed for art-conscious consumers, collectors, design enthusiasts, and modern homeowners who value heritage, craftsmanship, and contemporary aesthetics, keeping their appreciation for culture and storytelling at the core of the design process.The design approach focuses on innovation, artistic interpretation, functionality, and visual storytelling, ensuring that each product is both decorative and practical. Through research into traditional Indian art forms and contemporary surface design techniques, the project identifies the opportunity to bridge heritage crafts with modern interior décor.
Materials such as glazed ceramic surfaces, glass décor objects, waterslide decal paper, ceramic transfer sheets, UV-curable inks, protective coatings, and specialised printing substrates were chosen to achieve durability, vibrant visual impact, and premium-quality finishes. Techniques including digital illustration, vector-based artwork development, decal firing, ceramic transfer application, and UV digital printing were used to translate traditional motifs into contemporary collectable products. Visually, the project is defined by bold pop-art colour palettes, layered graphic compositions, geometric structures, expressive patterns, and contemporary interpretations of traditional motifs, reflecting a balance between cultural heritage and modern design sensibilities. The final outcome, a curated collection of ceramic mugs, trays, decorative plates, vases, glass décor pieces, and artistic home accents, embodies the idea of everyday objects as collectable art while encouraging deeper engagement with India’s artistic traditions.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the relevance of traditional Indian art forms in contemporary lifestyles, positioning design as a tool for cultural appreciation, storytelling, and innovation. Ultimately, “Kala Griha” stands as a reflection of creative transformation, where heritage-inspired artistry is reimagined through contemporary design to create meaningful objects that celebrate culture within modern living spaces.
