Irulina Alankriti – Adornment of Black by Daniel Jayan A

“Irulina Alankriti – Adornment of Black” is a project by Daniel Jayan A, M.Sc. Fashion Design & Management, at JD School of Design, Bengaluru. Inspired by the traditional Bidriware craft of Bidar, Karnataka, the project explores the theme of heritage, craftsmanship, and contemporary luxury. It aims to reinterpret the intricate engraving and metal inlay techniques of Bidriware through fashion, transforming a centuries-old art form into sophisticated evening wear for the modern woman.

Design Brief

The collection is designed for individuals who appreciate couture fashion, artisanal craftsmanship, and culturally inspired design. Keeping elegance and timelessness at the core of the design process, the garments blend traditional artistry with contemporary silhouettes to create a refined luxury aesthetic.
The design approach focuses on innovation in surface development and craftsmanship. Through research into the distinctive blackened metal surfaces and intricate inlay work of Bidriware, the project identified opportunities to translate these techniques into textiles. Rather than replicating the craft directly, the collection uses heat-engraved black suede velvet to recreate the appearance of carved metal surfaces.

The engraved motifs are further enhanced with gold Naqshi (Nakshi) pita wire embroidery, mimicking the luminous effect of traditional metal inlay. Extensive experimentation was required to perfect the engraving process and achieve precise placement of the metallic wire within the engraved patterns. Visually, the collection is defined by dramatic contrasts between deep black and radiant gold, reflecting a contemporary interpretation of Bidriware’s iconic aesthetic. Rich textures, ornate motifs, and luxurious embellishments create garments that embody elegance and craftsmanship. The final outcome is a collection of evening wear that transforms traditional metal artistry into wearable couture.Through this project, the designer highlights the relevance of India’s heritage crafts in modern fashion. Ultimately, “Irulina Alankriti – Adornment of Black” reflects the seamless fusion of tradition and innovation, demonstrating how historic craftsmanship can evolve into contemporary luxury while preserving its cultural significance.
