The “Imitated Art” collection is designed by Prerana C, Sania Khan & Dhanusiya B G, students of the Diploma in Fashion Design at JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bengaluru and winners of “Style Innovator Award”. Today, with digital innovation roaring all over, Gen Z stands as the most geared generation toward the influences of the vast resources of the online world.

Social media has become their gateway to an endless stream of styles and trends—cottage-core, retro vibes, and the Y2K revival—just a few that resonate with their desire for individuality. However, what makes this generation unique is its ability to take inspiration from the past and infuse it with its creative twist.
This intersection of innovation and nostalgia is revered by fashion imitation art. To give them a new look for contemporary wardrobes, for instance, it can draw from the intricate tapestry of past styles, such as impressionism’s dreamy hues, Cubism’s bold shapes, or Surrealism’s fantastical components. This creates wearable art in the form of fashion canvases by fusing modern style with artistic expression.

For designers, telling a story is equally as important as creating clothes. The emotions of a time are translated into tangible, wearable designs using textiles like velvet and crepe silk. Whether it be romanticism about the simplified world or rebellion against fast urban life, these designs stand as invitations to wearable art, shared at a profoundly personal level.
It is more than a trend, bridging the gap between generations and inviting rediscovery into the beauty of the past with the creative freedom of the present. In short, this is giving Gen Z the chance to make history of their own.
