“Hidden Pattern” is a project by Sakshi B Jain, BVA Graphic Design 2022 batch at JD School of Design, Bengaluru. Inspired by the storytelling depth and visual language of traditional Indian art forms such as Rogan Art, the project explores the theme of cultural preservation, interactive learning, and digital storytelling. It aims to transform traditional crafts into engaging memory-based learning experiences while responding to the challenge of limited accessibility, low digital visibility, and declining engagement with heritage art forms among younger audiences.
The project is designed for younger generations, creative learners, students, culturally curious users, and digital audiences seeking immersive and educational experiences, keeping accessibility, interaction, and cultural understanding at the core of the design process.The design approach focuses on combining interaction design, gameplay, and cultural storytelling to create an engaging and meaningful digital learning ecosystem, ensuring that traditional crafts are experienced as living systems rather than static displays. Through research into artisan processes, motif symbolism, traditional storytelling methods, and user interaction patterns,
the project identifies the need for more participatory and memory-driven approaches to craft education and cultural engagement. Materials and visual elements such as traditional motifs, handcrafted textures, symbolic forms, guided interfaces, motion-based visuals, and interactive gameplay systems are combined with techniques including UI/UX design, information design, memory-based interaction, digital storytelling, and rule-based gameplay to achieve immersive and educational user experiences. Visually, the project is defined by craft-inspired motifs, layered storytelling visuals, earthy and culturally rooted aesthetics, interactive interfaces, and minimal yet engaging digital compositions, reflecting the richness of traditional art while maintaining a contemporary and user-friendly experience. The final outcome, a multi-craft interactive digital platform beginning with Rogan Art and expanding into Kalamkari, Warli, Gond, and Pattachitra, embodies the idea of transforming cultural knowledge into playful and memorable interaction while seeking to build stronger emotional and educational connections between users and traditional crafts.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the importance of preserving artisan knowledge through technology, interaction, and participatory storytelling, positioning design as a tool for cultural continuity, education, and accessibility. Ultimately, “Hidden Pattern” stands as a reflection of how traditional crafts can evolve into meaningful digital experiences, with heritage becoming interactive, memorable, and relevant for future generations.
