“Goan Chitari Art-Inspired Cafeteria” is a project by Vishwajeet Sakhalkar, Diploma in Interior Design 2025 at JD Institute, Goa. Inspired by the vibrant murals, folk motifs, and storytelling traditions of Goan Chitari Art, the project explores the theme of cultural identity through contemporary hospitality design. It aims to create an engaging and memorable cafeteria that celebrates Goa’s artistic heritage while responding to the need for functional, comfortable, and visually stimulating dining spaces.
The project is designed for students, professionals, families, and visitors seeking a culturally immersive dining experience, keeping comfort, accessibility, and user engagement at the core of the design process.The design approach focuses on functionality, cultural storytelling, visual appeal, and efficient spatial planning, ensuring that the space remains both practical and aesthetically enriching. Through research into Goan Chitari Art and its narrative-driven visual language, the project identifies the need to preserve and reinterpret local artistic traditions within contemporary commercial interiors.
Materials such as textured wall finishes, custom mural artworks, natural wood, metal, glass, durable commercial-grade finishes, and energy-efficient LED lighting and techniques including mural integration, handcrafted detailing, layered textures, and thematic colour application were chosen to achieve durability, cultural expression, and a welcoming atmosphere. Visually, the project is defined by vibrant colours, expressive artwork, handcrafted details, warm wood textures, and contemporary design elements, reflecting the storytelling spirit and cultural richness of Goan Chitari Art. The final outcome, a cafeteria with comfortable seating zones, efficient service counters, organized circulation pathways, and functional storage spaces, embodies the fusion of tradition and modernity while creating a lively and engaging dining environment. Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the importance of regional art forms in shaping meaningful interior experiences, positioning design as a tool for cultural preservation, storytelling, and community engagement. Ultimately, “Goan Chitari Art-Inspired Cafeteria” stands as a reflection of Goa’s vibrant artistic heritage, where traditional narratives are reimagined within a contemporary hospitality setting.
