“Fragmented Royalty” is a project by Viji Sree S, M.Sc. Fashion Design & Management at JD School of Design, Bengaluru. Inspired by the revolutionary art movement of Cubism, the project explores the themes of transformation, reconstruction, craftsmanship, and artistic expression. It aims to translate fragmented visual compositions into contemporary fashion while creating a dialogue between fine art and textile craftsmanship.
The collection is designed for individuals who appreciate bold artistic expressions, heritage techniques, and fashion that carries a strong conceptual narrative. Keeping creativity, structure, and craftsmanship at the centre, the collection transforms abstract forms into refined wearable statements.The design approach focuses on the Cubist philosophy of viewing objects through multiple perspectives and fragmented forms. Inspired by the works of artists such as Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, the collection explores deconstruction and reconstruction by transforming geometric fragments into structured silhouettes and appliqué-based surface designs.
Rather than portraying fragmentation as disorder, the collection presents it as a process of creating new visual harmony. A key element of the collection is the use of Tyrian purple, a colour historically associated with royalty, prestige, and luxury. This rich palette of purple shades enhances the regal identity of the collection while adding depth and sophistication. Raw silk was selected as the primary fabric for its luxurious texture, structured drape, and ability to support intricate surface development. The traditional Kantha running stitch is incorporated to connect the appliqué elements, adding handcrafted texture and symbolising continuity, resilience, and the relationship between heritage and innovation.The collection features geometric appliqué details, structured forms, and artistic compositions that reflect the fragmented yet balanced nature of Cubist artworks. The careful placement of each element creates a visual rhythm while maintaining wearability and contemporary appeal.Through this project, the designer highlights how traditional craftsmanship and modern artistic movements can come together to create meaningful fashion narratives. Ultimately, “Fragmented Royalty” represents the transformation of fragmented forms into a unified expression of elegance, history, and contemporary design.
