STUDENT GUIDELINES

Roles & Responsibilities of Participants

  1. Develop a Strong Creative Vision:
    • Conceptualize unique and practical design ideas that align with the JDDA theme.
    • Be open to feedback from mentors and refine designs based on constructive criticism.
    • Maintain clarity in design articulation through sketches, prototype, and presentations.
  2. Ensure Concept Clarity:
    • Submit well-researched and clearly defined concept statements for mentor approval.
    • Align ideas with design principles and project feasibility requirements.
    • Keep documentation signed and dated for tracking progress.
  3. Focus on Technical Precision:
    • Incorporate key design aspects such as a. Design principles (scale, proportion, balance, functionality) b. Material selection (sustainability, cost-effectiveness, durability) c. Execution feasibility ( manufacturability, and technicality).
  4. Time Management & Discipline:
    • Follow structured timelines and deadlines as set in Google Classroom.
    • Break project tasks into phases and adhere to completion checkpoints.
    • Track personal and team progress using Google Classroom and Excel sheets.
    • Ensure equal participation in project work and accountability for deadlines.
  5. Conduct Thorough Research:
    • Study relevant case studies, emerging materials, and innovative techniques.
    • Reference industry publications, academic papers, and real-world applications.
    • Present research findings with proper documentation and references.
  6. Meet Performance Milestones:
    • Engage actively in structured critique sessions.
    • Document feedback at each project phase and implement necessary improvements.
    • Submit all deliverables through Google Classroom and adhere to quality standards.
  7. Adhere to Meeting Schedules:
    • Attend mentor sessions as per the communicated time slots.
    • Prepare queries and updates before meetings to maximize productivity.
    • Maintain a record of meeting attendance and engagement.

STAGE 1:

DISCUSSION WITH CLASS MENTORS
Google form with the initial three Ideas has to be filled. Discussing the same with the class mentors.

STAGE 2:

PHASE 1

  • Presentation of Initial Ideas: Students will present their initial three design ideas.
  • Idea Selection & Theme Alignment: Students will select one of these ideas and ensure it aligns with the designated theme.
  • Discussion with Mentors: Students will discuss their selected ideas with their assigned design mentors.
  • Final Idea/Concept Approval: Mentors will provide final approval for the selected idea/concept.

PHASE 2

  • Project/Collection Overview:
    • Following the presentation and approval of the chosen theme, provide a brief overview of the project or collection.
    • Include detailed information about the selected topic.
    • Clearly explain how the chosen topic connects to the approved theme.
  • Brainstorming and Mind Mapping:
    • Conduct thorough brainstorming and mind-mapping exercises related to the chosen topic.
    • Document the brainstorming and mind-mapping process in the process book.

Deliverables:

  • Presentation: Create a PowerPoint presentation that includes:
    • The finalized design idea.
    • A detailed storyline explaining how the idea connects to the JDDA 2025 theme.
  • Brainstorming & Mind Mapping: Include documentation of the brainstorming and mind-mapping process undertaken for the chosen topic.

Key checkpoints to be considered: 

Theme Alignment: All topics must align with the unveiled theme.

Regular Mentor Meetings: Students are required to meet with their mentors regularly during the allotted time slots.

Prompt Deliverable Submission: No delays in the submission of any deliverables will be tolerated.

Rejection Points (For Students)

  • Late Initial Presentation: Students who fail to submit their initial presentation on time will be disqualified from further participation in the process.
  • Clarity of Ideas: Students must demonstrate a clear understanding of their ideas and how they connect to the designated theme.
  • Deadline Adherence: Strict adherence to all project deadlines is mandatory.

STAGE 3: RESEARCH

Research & Development:

  • Thorough Research: Students must conduct in-depth research on their chosen topic, inspiration, or ideas.
  • Visual Library: Compile a comprehensive visual library of inspirations, including images, colour palettes, textures, and relevant keywords.
  • Market Research:
    • Trend Analysis: Conduct thorough primary and secondary research on current trends, target markets, historical references, and cultural influences. Develop a comprehensive trend board to visually represent this research.
    • Client Empathy: Develop empathy maps and create detailed client profiles for the target audience.
  • Inspiration Sourcing: Explore various sources of inspiration, including images, artworks, nature, and other relevant sources.
  • Competitive Analysis: Perform a thorough competitor analysis, including a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats).
  • Design Brief Finalization: Finalize a concise and informative design brief (minimum 150 words) that includes a detailed description of the design concept.
  • Process Documentation: Write detailed descriptions of the design concept and its development process, including all research findings and insights. Document these findings comprehensively in the process book.

Deliverables 

  • In-depth research on the approved topic. (With image references)
  • Process book(Digital/physical)
  • Trend report (trend board)
  • Design brief (description of the design and collection minimum of 150 words)


Design Brief

A brief contains a specific goal that is to be met by the design & needs to include anything that will allow the designer to initiate the design process, including defining the journey where you connected your ideas to the theme.
Details to be added: Inspiration, storyline e(how is the theme connected to the inspiration), Overall mood of the collection, design details, silhouette colour palette, elements and principles of design involved in the collection.

Rejection Points:

  • Inadequate Research: Students will be subject to rejection if they fail to conduct proper research and gather sufficient information.
  • Process Book Maintenance: The process book must be consistently updated and submitted with all required deliverables.
  • Design Brief Finalization: The design brief must be updated and shared with the mentor. The final approved draft of the design brief must be included in the process book.

AFTER THE COMPLETION OF THE ABOVE THREE STAGES STUDENTS HAVE TO FILL IN THEIR DESIGN BRIEF, SOCIAL MEDIA HANDLES AND FULL NAME IN AN EXCEL SHEET SHARED BY THE DESIGN MENTOR.

FABRIC SOURCING &
IDENTIFICATION

PHASE 1: BEFORE DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

  • Fabric Exploration: Students will collect fabric swatches and conduct experiments with various textiles.
  • Textile Mentor Consultations: Students are required to meet with Textile Mentors for fabric sourcing and approval. These meetings must be scheduled according to the time slots provided by the mentors.

Key Considerations for Fabric Selection:

Fabric Properties:

  • Fibre and Composition: Evaluate the fibre content and composition of the fabric.
  • Construction: Analyze the fabric construction (e.g., weave, knit, non-woven).
  • Geometric Properties: Consider the fabric’s geometric properties (e.g., drape, hand, texture).
  • Wearability and Functionality: Assess the fabric’s suitability for wear and its functional properties (e.g., breathability, durability, water resistance).
  • Non-Wearability: Explore potential non-wearable applications for the fabric.
  • Aesthetic Properties: Evaluate the fabric’s aesthetic qualities (e.g., colour, texture, lustre).
  • Sustainability: Consider the environmental and social sustainability of the fabric.
  • Commercial Viability and Market Relevance: Assess the fabric’s commercial viability and relevance to the target market.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Ensure the fabric choice is culturally sensitive and appropriate within the context of the design concept.

Fabric Quality: No compromise on fabric quality is acceptable.
Mentor Approval: Students will only use fabrics that have been explicitly approved by their respective Textile Mentors.

SURFACE ORNAMENTATION/FABRIC MANIPULATIONS/MATERIAL EXPLORATIONS

  • Concurrent Exploration: Surface Ornamentation (SO) exploration must occur concurrently with design development.
  • Embellishment Techniques: Experiment with a wide range of surface embellishments, including embroidery, prints, and textural techniques.
  • Documentation: Meticulously document all surface development techniques used.
  • Fabric Manipulation Samples: Students are required to create a minimum of 20 fabric manipulation/surface ornamentation samples before final technique approval by the Textile/SO mentor.
  • Fabric Backup: Students must maintain an extra two meters of each approved fabric as a backup. This backup fabric should not be used for garment construction.

Deliverables:

  • Fabric Swatch Cards: Maintain two physical swatch cards:
    • One swatch card should include all collected fabric swatches.
    • A second swatch card should include only the approved fabric swatches.

Rejection Points:

  • Fabric Quality: No compromise on the quality of the fabric will be permitted.
  • Premium Fabrics: Only good and premium quality fabrics are acceptable for this collection.
  • Minimum Sample Requirement: A minimum of 20 samples must be created for each fabric manipulation or surface ornamentation technique explored.

STAGE 3: DESIGN DEVELOPMENT AND IDEATION

Visual Board Development:

  • Visual Board Creation: Develop comprehensive visual boards to support the concept process and the approved design brief. These boards, which can be digital or physical (A4 size), should include inspiration, mood, fabric, texture, looks, and client boards.
  • Image Quality: Ensure all images used in the boards are of high quality and non-pixelated. If using physical boards, upload digital copies of all images to a designated Google Drive folder.
  • Mentor Approval: All visual boards require approval from the design mentors before proceeding.
  • A2 Presentation Board: Upon approval of the individual boards, create a combined A2 presentation board using the provided template. This board will be presented during the final jury.

Design Development:

  • Ideation & Silhouette Generation: The ideation and silhouette generation process must be conducted under the guidance and with the approval of the design mentors.
  • Colorway Exploration: After approval of the final 10 designs, students shall experiment with various colourways for each design.

Documentation & Deliverables:

  • Flat Drawings: Submit detailed flat drawings of all approved designs, including front and back views with comprehensive annotations.
  • Spec Sheets & Cost Sheets: Develop comprehensive spec sheets and cost sheets for all garments.

Key Pointers:

  • Design Innovation: Encourage students to think outside the box, exploring innovative design lines and silhouettes. Emphasize the importance of incorporating unique garment details. Colour Selection:
    • Colour Considerations: Choose colours that are appropriate for the mood, season, and target audience Combinations: Explore and create harmonious and impactful colour combinations.
  • Texture Representation: Utilize techniques like hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling to effectively represent fabric textures in their designs.
  • Technical Feasibility: Students must meet with technical mentors (PMT/GMT) during the design approval stage to ensure the feasibility of their garment designs.

Deliverables

  • Digital Boards: Create A4-sized digital boards for Inspiration, Mood, Look, Fabric/Texture/Trim, and Client.
  • A2 Presentation Board: Develop an A2 presentation board according to the provided template and print it on Sunboard.
  • Sketchbook Development:
    • Silhouette Generation: Generate silhouettes and develop designs using initial rough sketches in a gateway sheet book with 10-12 head croquis templates.
    • Design Exploration: Explore different silhouettes, proportions, and design details in relevance to the theme/concept.
    • Annotations: Include detailed annotations on design details, fasteners, and the placement of motifs or surface ornamentations (if any).
  • Daily Sketching: Present a minimum of 100 sketches to the design mentor each day.
  • Colour Variations: Develop 5 colour variations for each of the 10 approved garments, maintaining a cohesive colour palette.
  • Flat Drawings: Submit complete and detailed flat drawings of the front and back of all 10 garments, including annotations for all garment details, fastenings, and openings. (These drawings will be included in the final spec sheet.)
  • Spec Sheet: Develop comprehensive spec sheets for all garments.
  • A3 Illustration Board: Present the final approved illustration professionally on an A3 board (both digital and physical) with appropriate background and placement. This board requires mentor approval.
  • Process Book: Maintain a well-organized process book that includes all of the above deliverables.

Rejection Points

  • Visual Board Quality: The quality of images used in the visual boards must be of a high standard.
  • Visual Board Approval: Visual boards must be approved by the design mentors before proceeding to the silhouette generation stage.
  • A2 Board Compliance: The A2 presentation board must adhere strictly to the provided template. Any deviations from the template will result in rejection.
  • Daily Sketching Requirement: A minimum of 100 sketches must be presented to the mentor each day.
  • Illustration Quality: The quality of illustrations must meet the specified guidelines.
  • Design Clarity: Students must demonstrate a clear understanding of design details and technical aspects during design approvals. Failure to do so may result in design rejection.
  • Colour Variation Requirement: The development of 5 colour variations for each of the 10 garments is mandatory. Failure to do so will prevent the finalization of the designs.

Flat Drawing Requirement: Flat drawings of the front and back of all 10 garments are mandatory.

PHASE 2 (FABRIC SOURCING): AFTER THE APPROVAL OF THE DESIGN

Once all the 10 designs have been approved students will further go for the sourcing of the bulk fabric and the development of the print/pattern/embellishment. (As per the design requirement)

STAGE 4: PATTERN AND TOILE DEVELOPMENT

Key Points to be Considered:

  • Pattern Development:
    • Develop patterns for all approved designs.
    • Obtain approval for all patterns from both technical and design mentors.
    • Utilize the size chart provided by the Technical Mentors.
    • Adapt and modify patterns as needed to accommodate the specific design requirements.
  • Toile Development:
    • Create tiles using actual fabric.
    • If the toile meets the required standards, it may be considered as the final garment.
  • Pattern & Toile Presentation: Present developed patterns and toiles to both design and technical mentors.
  • Construction Documentation: Document construction details and sample sewing techniques.
    • Include Behind-the-Scenes (BTS) videos of the construction process.
  • Toile Photography: Document the toile with high-quality photographs.
  • Cost Sheet Development:
    • Fill out a detailed cost sheet for each garment, considering fabric, trims, and accessories.
    • Templates for the cost sheets will be provided by the design mentors.

Deliverables

  • Patterns: Submit patterns for all garments, including all markings and pattern details.
  • Toile: Submit one toile per student (or two toiles if working in a team of two).
  • Cost Sheets: Submit cost sheets for all garments.
  • Process Book Documentation:
    • Include miniature patterns of all garments in the process book.
    • Include photographs of the toile in the process book.

Rejection Points

  • Pattern Accuracy: Patterns must accurately reflect the approved designs and adhere to the provided size chart.
  • Toile Quality: The quality of the toiles must meet the highest standards.
  • Toile Accuracy: The toile must accurately represent the design; no deviations from the approved design are permitted.
  • Spec Sheet and Cost Sheet Approval: The spec sheets and cost sheets must be completed and approved by the design mentors.

STAGE 6:GARMENT CONSTRUCTION/Execution

Key Points to be Considered:

  • Garment Assembly: Assemble the garments using the finalized patterns and approved construction techniques.
  • Construction Documentation: Document the entire construction process with photographs and detailed notes. Record a Behind-the-Scenes (BTS) video of the construction process.
  • Quality Control:
    • Conduct thorough quality checks throughout the construction process and make necessary adjustments.
    • Ensure high-quality seam finishes.
    • Ensure consistent and high-quality stitching.
    • Ensure sewing threads perfectly match the fabric colour.
  • Construction Guidelines:
    • Avoid the use of concealed zippers.
    • Utilize high-quality, correctly sized shoulder pads and bust cups.
    • Maintain a 2-inch seam allowance for alterations.
    • Obtain approval for the use of fusing, lining, and canvas before construction.

TRIM/ACCESSORIES APPROVALS:

  • Approval Process: Trim and accessory selections must be approved by both design and technical mentors.
    • This approval can be obtained either during the fabric approval stage or before the construction stage.
  • Quality Standards: Ensure that all trims and accessories meet the highest quality standards.
  • Zipper Restrictions: Concealed zippers are not permitted. Use normal zippers with concealed finishes.
Deliverables
  • Completed Garments: Submit all 10 garments fully stitched and finished.
Rejection Points
  • Sketch-Garment Consistency: The final garments must accurately reflect the approved sketches. Any deviations from the approved sketches may result in rejection.
  • Trim and Accessory Approval: The use of any trims or fabrics that were not previously approved will result in the rejection of the garment.
  • Seam Quality: Maintain high-quality seam lines and stitchlines.
  • Shoulderless/Bustier Construction: Shoulderless or bustier designs must be constructed with noodle straps.
  • Tailored Construction: All garments must be entirely tailor-made. Ready-made garments are not permitted.
  • Colour Accuracy: No colour variations or deviations from the approved colours are allowed.
  • Mentor Approval: Students must report to design and technical mentors after the completion of each garment, obtain approval, and then proceed to the next garment.

STAGE 6: STYLING

Styling Board Development

  • Develop two sets of styling boards:
    • One set showcasing how the garments will be presented using the final illustrations.
    • A second set demonstrates how the completed garments will be presented.
  • Photo Reference Gathering: Gather photo references or illustrations depicting the desired final look for each garment. This should be done promptly following design approval.
  • Realistic Styling: Create realistic styling boards for each completed garment.
  • Accessory Inclusion: Include a variety of accessories and additional styling elements in each styling board. Designers are required to create accessories for a minimum of two garments.
  • Styling Mentor Approval: Obtain final approval for all styling boards from the styling mentors.

Deliverables

  • Digital Style Boards: Create digital style boards for all 10 garments.
  • Accessory Development: Plan and create accessories for all 10 garments. A minimum of two accessories must be designed and created by each student.

Rejection Points

  • Accessory Planning: Accessories must be planned for all 10 garments.

Accessory Presentation: Students must bring all accessories to the jury presentation. These accessories must be previously approved by both styling and design mentors.

STAGE 7: FITTINGS/JURY/SHOW

JURY

  • Presentation Preparation: Students must develop creative and engaging presentations for their garments, process books, visual boards, and all other necessary deliverables.
  • Prior Approval: Ensure all deliverables are reviewed and approved by all respective mentors before the jury date.
  • A2 Board Accuracy: Thoroughly review the final A2 visual boards to ensure they are free of errors and inconsistencies.

Deliverables

  • Visual Boards: Present all finalized visual boards.
  • Process Books: Submit completed process books.
  • Fabric Swatches: Present swatch cards with all sourced fabrics and approved fabrics.
  • Garments: Present all 10 garments neatly ironed and trimmed.
  • Toile: Submit the toile (made in actual fabric).
  • BTS Videos: Present BTS videos of the construction process.
  • Extra Fabric: Submit 2 meters of extra fabric for each garment.
  • Coat Covers: Provide coat covers with labels for each garment.
  • Hangers: Provide clipped hangers for all garments.
  • Accessories: Present any other props or accessories required for the jury presentation.

FITTINGS

  • Attendance: All students must be present at all scheduled fittings.
  • Garment Availability: All 10 garments must be available for fitting.
  • Alteration Implementation: All alterations specified during fittings must be accurately implemented. Failure to implement necessary alterations will result in the disqualification of the garment from the show.

Deliverables

  • Garments: Present all 10 garments.
  • Garment Transportation: Garments must be transported to the fitting location in coat covers with clipped hangers.
  • Accessories: Bring any special props or accessories required for the fitting.

Rejection Points

  • Fitting Absence: Students who are absent from scheduled fittings will be disqualified from participating in the show.
  • Garment Absence: All 10 garments must be present at the fittings.
  • Alteration Implementation: Failure to implement alterations specified during the fitting will result in the disqualification of the garment from the show.

FASHION SHOW

  • Garment Preparation: All garments must be ready for the show after any necessary alterations.
  • Accessory Approval: All accessories must be approved before the day of the show.
  • Deliverable Checklist: Students must maintain a checklist of all deliverables required for the show.

Deliverables

  • Garments: Present all 10 garments, dry cleaned and transported in coat covers with clip hangers.
  • Accessories: Present all accessories for all 10 garments in a zip pouch.

Rejection Points

  • Fitting Absence: Students who are absent from scheduled fittings will be disqualified from participating in the show.
  • Garment Absence: All 10 garments must be present at the fittings.
  • Alteration Implementation: Failure to implement alterations specified during the fitting will result in the disqualification of the garment from the show.
  • Accessory Approval: All accessories must be approved before the day of the show.

6 STAGE 6: GARMENT CONSTRUCTION/EXECUTION
  • All 10 garments (completely stitched) with proper seam finishes and fasteners.
April 1st – April 20th
7 STAGE 7: STYLING
  • Digital style board (all 10 garments).
  • Accessories for all garments planned (minimum of 2 accessories must be made by the student).
To be done simultaneously during execution.
8 JURY (Internal and External Jury)
  • Visual Boards.
  • Completed Process Books.
  • Swatch cards with sourced and approved fabrics.
  • All 10 garments neatly ironed and trimmed.
  • Toile (made in actual fabric).
  • BTS videos.
  • 2 meters of extra fabric.
  • Coat covers (with labels).
  • Hangers (clipped hangers).
  • Any other props or accessories needed for the jury.
Same deliverables for both juries.
May 25, 2025 (Internal Jury)
9 FITTINGS
  • All 10 garments.
  • Any special props/accessories required for the trial.
  • Garments must be carried in coat covers with clipped hangers.
10 SHOW
  • All 10 garments dry cleaned and carried in coat covers with clipped hangers.
  • Accessories for all garments (carried in a zip pouch).
