“Echoes Of Kawandi” is a project by Ritika M, Diploma in Fine Jewellery Design 2025 batch at JD Institute. Inspired by the traditional Kawandi quilting practice and its intuitive “go with the flow” technique, the project explores the theme of layering, storytelling, and fluid craftsmanship. It aims to reinterpret the patchwork essence of Kawandi textiles into contemporary jewellery design while responding to the growing appreciation for handcrafted, narrative-driven wearable art.
The project is designed for modern consumers who value artisanal aesthetics, individuality, and culturally inspired jewellery, keeping emotional connection, uniqueness, and contemporary wearability at the core of the design process.The design approach focuses on fluidity, craftsmanship, experimentation, and organic composition, ensuring that the outcome is both expressive and wearable. Through research into Kawandi textile traditions, layering techniques, and intuitive craft processes, the project identified the need for jewellery that captures the raw, imperfect beauty of handmade artistry. Materials such as silver,
waste fabric, gemstones, chains, thread, fabric glue, and textile tools, along with techniques including layering, stitching, fabric integration, and handcrafted assembly, were chosen to achieve a tactile, contemporary, and organically composed aesthetic. Visually, the project is defined by layered forms, irregular compositions, earthy and vibrant colour palettes, soft cabochon stones, and flowing silhouettes, reflecting movement, individuality, and the handmade spirit of Kawandi quilting. The final outcome, a jewellery collection featuring a headpiece, statement necklace, and arm accessory, embodies fluid storytelling and intuitive craftsmanship while translating textile-inspired artistry into modern wearable design.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the relevance of traditional textile techniques within contemporary jewellery, positioning design as a tool for cultural reinterpretation, sustainability, and creative expression. Ultimately, “Echoes Of Kawandi” stands as a reflection of organic transformation and craftsmanship, where fragments and layers come together to create meaningful contemporary adornment.
