Echoes of Earth by Navananthana S S

“Echoes of Earth” is a project by Navananthana S S, M.Sc. Fashion Design & Management, at JD School of Design, Bengaluru. Inspired by the traditional Bogolanfini, also known as mud cloth, from Mali, West Africa, the project explores the themes of cultural storytelling, sustainability, and handcrafted textile traditions. It aims to reinterpret the symbolic beauty of this heritage textile through contemporary fashion while preserving its connection to nature, identity, and craftsmanship.

Design Brief

The collection is designed for individuals who appreciate sustainable fashion, cultural narratives, and thoughtfully crafted garments. Keeping comfort, authenticity, and contemporary appeal at the centre of the design process, the collection transforms traditional textile expressions into modern wearable forms. The design approach focuses on adapting the symbolic patterns and earthy aesthetics of Bogolanfini into contemporary silhouettes. Through research into this traditional handwoven textile, the project explores its geometric motifs, organic patterns, and cultural meanings associated with history, protection, nature, and community. Natural fabrics such as cotton, handwoven cotton, and linen were selected for their breathability, comfort, and sustainable qualities, while also providing a suitable base for handcrafted surface development. The collection incorporates traditional-inspired mud painting and natural dye techniques, with extensive experimentation required to achieve consistent colours, softness, durability, and wash fastness while maintaining the authenticity of the craft.

Visually, the collection is defined by clean silhouettes, layered elements, and a nature-inspired colour palette featuring brown, black, beige, cream, rust, and ochre. These earthy shades reflect the organic materials used in traditional Bogolanfini textiles, while geometric motifs and handcrafted details add depth and cultural significance to the garments.Through this project, the designer highlights the importance of preserving global craft traditions while adapting them for contemporary fashion. Ultimately, “Echoes of Earth” reflects the timeless relationship between nature, craftsmanship, and identity, demonstrating how traditional textile practices can inspire sustainable and meaningful fashion narratives.
