Future → Built Creatively
“EARTH & EMBER” is a project by Srinidhi Susarla, an MSc Interior Design 2024 batch student at JD School of Design, powered by JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bengaluru. Inspired by the traditional craftsmanship of Saharanpur wood carving and the warmth of earthy tropical modernism, the project explores the theme of community-driven hospitality through tactile and biophilic design. It aims to create a contemporary café environment that blends artisanal heritage with modern café culture, while responding to the evolving need for multifunctional social and co-working spaces.
The design approach focuses on functionality, sustainability, material authenticity, and experiential comfort, ensuring that the outcome is both practical and emotionally engaging. Through research into Saharanpur wood carving traditions and contemporary hospitality trends, the project identifies the importance of handcrafted detailing, natural materials, and biophilic integration in shaping meaningful user experiences. Materials such as terracotta, cane, rattan, exposed brick, textured plaster, natural wood, and stone were chosen to achieve warmth, tactility, and environmental harmony. Techniques inspired by geometric carvings, handcrafted partitions, curved wooden battens, and layered textures were incorporated throughout the interiors to establish a strong craft-based identity.

Visually, the project is defined by earthy tones, warm ambient lighting, tactile surfaces, greenery, and artisanal detailing, reflecting the concept of “Rooted in Earth, Brewed with Fire.” The final outcome, a multifunctional café space, embodies warmth, creativity, and connection while offering users an immersive hospitality experience that feels both contemporary and culturally grounded.
Through this project, the designer aims to highlight how traditional craftsmanship and nature-inspired design can redefine modern hospitality interiors, positioning design as a tool for sustainability, emotional connection, and community engagement. Ultimately, “EARTH & EMBER” stands as a reflection of material authenticity and human connection, where heritage craftsmanship and modern café culture coexist in a harmonious and sensory-rich environment.
