“Earth-Bound Learning” is a project by M B Deeksha Gowda from Diploma in Interior design July 2025 batch at JD Institute. Inspired by traditional earthen construction techniques such as cob structures and rammed earth architecture, the project explores the theme of tactile learning, environmental connection, and child-centric spatial design. It aims to create an early-childhood learning environment that reconnects young learners with the grounding and sensory qualities of natural materials while responding to the need for nurturing, calming, and experiential educational spaces.
The project is designed for young children and early learners, keeping comfort, curiosity, sensory engagement, and emotional safety at the core of the design process. The design approach focuses on organic spatial forms, material honesty, thermal comfort, and multisensory interaction, ensuring that the outcome is both functional and emotionally supportive.Through research into traditional earthen construction methods and the psychological impact of tactile environments on children, the project identifies the importance of natural materials in creating calming and immersive educational spaces.
This understanding informed the development of thick monolithic walls, sculpted interiors, and fluid transitions that mimic the qualities of natural landforms. Materials such as stabilized earth, lime-wash finishes, raw timber, and natural textures, along with techniques including rammed earth construction, handcrafted finishing, and organic spatial sculpting, were chosen to achieve thermal stability, acoustic comfort, and tactile richness.Visually, the project is defined by earthy tones, curved architectural forms, textured surfaces, and soft natural lighting, reflecting warmth, safety, and the connection between architecture and nature. The final outcome, an early-childhood learning academy, embodies the idea of space as a nurturing extension of the earth, where learning is shaped through touch, movement, and sensory experience.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the relevance of traditional construction wisdom within contemporary educational design, positioning design as a tool for emotional well-being, environmental awareness, and experiential learning. Ultimately, “Earth-Bound Learning” stands as a reflection of how architecture rooted in nature can foster comfort, curiosity, and meaningful connections between children and their physical environment.
