“Crafted Connections” is a project by Chehak Modi, Diploma in Interior Design May 2025 batch at JD Institute. Inspired by traditional wooden joinery techniques and the precision of handcrafted carpentry systems, the project explores the theme of craftsmanship, sustainability, and material honesty within contemporary office interiors. It aims to create a modern workspace that balances functionality, comfort, and aesthetics while responding to the growing need for human-centric and environmentally conscious office environments.
The project is designed for modern professionals and collaborative work cultures, keeping user comfort, workflow efficiency, and spatial flexibility at the core of the design process. The design approach focuses on functionality, ergonomic comfort, sustainability, and visual expression, ensuring that the workspace remains both practical and meaningful. Through research into traditional carpentry methods such as Japanese and interlocking wooden joinery systems, the project identifies the need for durable, repairable, and craft-driven alternatives to mass-produced office furniture and generic workplace interiors.The office space includes zones such as reception, workstations, cabins, conference rooms, phone booths, pantry, and collaborative spaces, all planned to support smooth circulation and a clear transition between public and private areas. Materials such as natural wood,
engineered timber, and sustainable finishes, along with techniques including exposed interlocking joinery systems and handcrafted detailing, were chosen to achieve structural durability, repairability, and a warm spatial experience.Visually, the project is defined by clean contemporary forms, exposed wooden joints, warm earthy tones, natural textures, and minimal yet expressive detailing, reflecting transparency, precision, and craftsmanship. The final outcome, a contemporary office interior rooted in traditional joinery, embodies the idea of visible connections—both structural and human—and seeks to create a workspace that feels authentic, collaborative, and engaging.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight how traditional craft techniques can evolve into relevant solutions for modern interiors, positioning design as a tool for sustainability, innovation, and cultural continuity. Ultimately, “Crafted Connections” stands as a reflection of the relationship between heritage and contemporary work culture, where traditional craftsmanship becomes the foundation for creating thoughtful and future-ready office spaces.
