“Athangudi Tile-Inspired Cafeteria” is a project by Chrisnoel Fernandes, Diploma in Interior Design 2025 at JD Institute, Goa. Inspired by the vibrant patterns, rich colours, and handcrafted craftsmanship of traditional Athangudi tiles, the project explores the theme of cultural heritage integrated into contemporary hospitality design. It aims to create a lively and welcoming dining environment that celebrates traditional artistry while responding to the functional needs of a modern cafeteria.
The project is designed for students, professionals, and visitors seeking a comfortable and engaging dining experience, keeping user comfort, accessibility, and visual appeal at the core of the design process.The design approach focuses on functionality, spatial efficiency, aesthetic balance, and customer experience, ensuring that the space is both practical and visually memorable. Through research into Athangudi tile craftsmanship and its distinctive geometric patterns, the project identifies the opportunity to reinterpret traditional design elements within a contemporary commercial setting.
Materials such as Athangudi tiles, natural wood finishes, metal, glass, textured surfaces, and energy-efficient LED lighting and techniques including pattern integration, material layering, and decorative surface applications were chosen to achieve durability, visual richness, and long-term usability. Visually, the project is defined by bold geometric motifs, vibrant colour palettes, handcrafted textures, warm lighting, and balanced material contrasts, reflecting the artistic heritage and timeless beauty of Athangudi tile craftsmanship. The final outcome, a cafeteria featuring comfortable seating areas, efficient service counters, organized circulation pathways, and functional storage spaces, embodies cultural vibrancy and hospitality while enhancing the overall dining experience.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the relevance of traditional crafts in contemporary interior environments, positioning design as a tool for cultural preservation, storytelling, and user engagement.
