“Aavran” is a project by Rohan Metri, BVA Graphic Design 2022 batch at JD School of Design, Bengaluru. Inspired by the storytelling traditions of Gond art and the lack of accessible systems supporting indigenous art practices, the project explores the theme of cultural preservation, emotional storytelling, and artisan empowerment. It aims to transform the relationship between users and traditional art by creating a platform where personal stories are translated into handcrafted visual narratives while responding to the growing disconnect between contemporary audiences and heritage art forms.
The project is designed for culturally conscious users, art enthusiasts, contemporary consumers, and individuals seeking meaningful, personalized artworks that carry emotional and cultural significance, keeping storytelling, authenticity, and human connection at the core of the design process.The design approach focuses on emotional user experience, accessibility, artisan collaboration, and system-driven storytelling, ensuring that the platform feels intuitive, calm, and meaningful rather than transactional. Through research into Gond art, indigenous storytelling traditions, digital accessibility, and artisan ecosystems, the project identifies the need for a structured platform that preserves traditional art while making it relevant within modern contexts.
Materials such as handcrafted illustrations, digital interfaces, minimal visual systems, storytelling frameworks, and culturally inspired graphics are combined with techniques including user-centered design, narrative-based interaction systems, digital commissioning workflows, and artisan-led visual interpretation to achieve an emotionally engaging and culturally respectful platform experience. Visually, the project is defined by earthy colour palettes, organic forms, handcrafted textures, minimal interface design, and folk-inspired visual language, reflecting the balance between cultural authenticity and contemporary digital aesthetics. The final outcome, a storytelling-driven e-commerce and commissioning platform for handcrafted traditional Indian artworks, embodies the idea of transforming personal memories into meaningful visual narratives while seeking to create deeper emotional connections between users, artisans, and indigenous art practices.Through this project, the designer aims to highlight the importance of preserving traditional art through thoughtful digital systems and artisan-centered experiences, positioning design as a tool for cultural continuity, accessibility, emotional engagement, and heritage preservation. Ultimately, “Aavran” stands as a reflection of how technology can support rather than replace traditional craftsmanship, with storytelling becoming a bridge that connects contemporary lives with the richness of indigenous artistic traditions.
